Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1881, pages 123 and 142, and 1882, page 37.) Thomas Thompson, charged on warrant with stealing money from the dwelling of Andrew Neilson, at Norfolk Road, near Inglewood, has been arrested by Sergeant William Emerson, Te Aroha Police, and remanded to New Plymouth.

A man, known as Antonio, is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with having, about 10.30 p.m. on the 18th instant, at Waterloo Quay, Wellington, violently assaulted and robbed Alfred Grey of an open-faced aluminium watch, American make, steel hands, maker’s name and number not known, and part of a gold-mounted horsehair guard; value £4 ss. Watch identifiable; identification or guard doubtful. Description of offender: A native of Portugal, a sailor, about thirty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, long dark curly hair, long dark beard whiskers and moustache, dark eyes, fierce-looking, scar over one of eyes and on left arm; wore dark shabby clothes; lazy appearance. He carries a dirk. He struck complainant on the side of the head with his fist and with a heavy stick, knocking him down. Complainant then became insensible, and when he returned to consciousness, two-and-a-half hours after, he found that ho had been stabbed with a knife in the right breast, and that his watch and guard were stolen. Offender was sentenced in South America to three months’ labour for a similar offence committed on complainant.

Stolen between the Bth and 10th instant, from the office of Winstone, Brothers, Customhouse Street, Auckland, a cash-box, containing Is. 6d. The cash-box has since been found, broken open and empty.

Stolen on the 11th instant, from the shop of Mary Ann Hudson, Wellington Street, Auckland, about twenty-six yards of glazed-print alpaca dressing; value 17s. 4d. Identification doubtful.

Stolen between the Ist and sth instant, from a box in a bedroom in Mrs. Carey’s boarding-house, junction of Cook and Nelson Streets, Auckland, three £1 notes; the property of Michael Jones.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the Governor Gordon Boarding-house, Albert Street, Auckland, a nearly-new blackserge coat, lined with grey material; the property of Robert Murdock; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Morrinsville, Piako, Auckland, a dark-grey waterproof coat, soft diagonal cloth-cord material with reddish specks or tinge, short band at back, slit at back; the property of William Cumming; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Between 11 p.m. on the 10th and 9.30 a.m. on the 12th ultimo the store of John Robinson, in Victoria Street, Christchurch, was broken into and about five pounds’ worth of mixed lollies stolen.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the dwelling of Edward Cock, at Parnell, noar Auckland, a gold keeper ring, MLC engraved on back; value £1 55.; and 15s. or 16s. in silver. Ring identifiable.

(See Police Gazette , 1883, page 156.) The gold stop-watch, reported stolen from the dwelling of William Cumming, at Hamilton East, has been recovered.

Between the Ist and 3rd instant the boot factory of Messrs. Toomer, Brothers, Lichfield Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and a pair of boots, value 165., stolen. The boots have since been found in a paddock near the factory.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from an hotel at Metliven, a pair of colonial-gold earrings, diamond pattern, a gold nob in centre ; the property of Elizabeth Rede. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant, from the bar of the Rising Sun Hotel, Karangahapo Road, Auckland, a meerschaum pipe ; the bowl is the shape of a man’s head with large beard, a small portion of the lower part of beard chipped oil, amber mouthpiece, and a plain silver ferrule on centre of stem ; the property of John Bascombe ; value £1 2s. 6d. Identifiable.

On the 14th instant the dwelling of George Webb, at Mount Misery, Jolmsonville, Wellington, was broken into, and the following stolen: A black-leather purse with three compartments, steel binding and clasps, containing 15s. Purse only identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th instant, from the shop-door of Charles Johnstone, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ black-cash-mere jacket, trimmed with lace and satin; value 15s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th instant, from the shop of James McAlpine, Manners Street, Wellington, the tray of an ordinary-sized cash-box, containing an open-faced silver lover w.atcli, maker Todd, Glasgow, number not known, glass cracked in centre, value £3; a gold ring, and a ruby for same, which had fallen out of the ring and was in the tray, value 15s. ; a pendant about the size of a sovereign with a Queen’s head on one side and an anchor on the other side, value 2s. 6d.; a crossed cheque for £1 10s. on the To Aro Branch of the Bank of New Zealand, drawn by Bowden, Treacher, and Co.; and £1 ss. in silver. Identifiable, except money.

Stolen on the 17th instant, from the dwelling of August Brown, at Crofton, near Wadcstown, Wellington, a £1 note, four pounds of sausages, a wooden pipe without mouthpiece, two sticks of tobacco, two boxes of matches, and a red-and-blue-merino comforter ; value ss. Pipe and comforter identifiable. Suspicion attached to Henry Walters, alias Dutch Harry. For his description, &c., see Police Gazette , 1883, page 168.

Stolen during the night of the 17th instant, from Fern Hill Club, Dunedin, two dark-brown tweed waterproof coats; one of them is new, with check lining, ventilators on shoulders, “ Expell’s Patent,” and a number consisting of three figures

on a piece of white indiarubber on inside of collar; the other is considerably worn, and is patched inside near the collar with a piece of Italian cloth ; the property of John McGregor; value £6. Old coat identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 15th instant, from the person of Thomas O’Shaughnossey, while in a railway carriage between Wanganui and Patca, a £1 note, and a crossed cheque, No. 152032, on the Colonial Bank, Wanganui, for £l2O, drawn by John Notman in favour of Loss 81648. Cheque identifiable.
