Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.
(See Police Gazette, 1882, page 206, and 1883, page 72.) The warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench for the arrest of Charles Peterson, for stealing a box of cambric handkerchiefs and an oilskin coat, the property of Thomas Hill, has been withdrawn.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, pages 54 and 76.) Robert Pluddle, charged on warrant with stealing a retriever dog, the property of George Willings, has been arrested by Constable Schulz, Makotoku Police, and discharged.
Stolen on the 30th ultimo, at Wyndham, a steeplechase pigskin saddle, rather long seat, two new stirrup leathers, and square steel stirrup irons, a lead bag, marked “T. Mortimer,” with 18 lb. of lead in pockets, attached, value £6; and two men’s ordinary riding saddles, value about £8 ; the property of David Milne. Steeplechase saddle identifiable; identification of the other saddles doubtful. Suspicion attached to Alexander Alexander, Scotch, a contract ploughman, twentynine years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, small dark beard whiskers and moustache, downcast-looking, speaks slowly ; dressed in dark-tweed suit. The saddles were removed by complainant from his hotel, which was then on fire, and handed to Alexander, to be taken by him to a place of safety, but they cannot since be found.
A letter posted at Hills Creek, Otago, on the 13th ultimo, by Charles Rose, addressed “Joseph Howell, Naseby Hospital,” has not reached its destination, and is believed to have been stolen. It contained three £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, Nos. 188065,1903779, and 1916895. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 9th or 10th instant, from the Greenmeadows Hotel stables, Taradale, an open-faced gold gilt Geneva watch, second-hand off, dent in guard ring, number not known, in bad repair; a gold-plated cable-link-pattern chain, and two copper snake-pattern chains; the property of Edward Moriarty; value £l. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from the clothes-line of Frederick A. Brazer, St. Asaph Street, Linwood, near Christchurch, three men’s linen shirts, “ F. A. Brazer” marked with marking-ink on front; value 18s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from off a horse at Timaru, an English hogskin saddle, in good order, pommel rather loose, web girths with new leathers at one end of each, stirrupleathers rather short and mended near buckle ; the property of Belfield Woollcom.be ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen between the Ist ultimo and Bth instant, at Normanby, a white barrow-pig about 170-lb. weight, a black barrow-pig about 60-lb. weight, four white sows, and two black sows, about six months old; the property of James Crocker; value £l2. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a cart in the yard of the Zetland Arms Hotel, Cashel Street, Christchurch, 10 lb. of fresh butter; the property of William Gerken; value 12s. 6d. Identifiable.
Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, from the stable of Charles Price, at Avenal, Southland, between thirty and forty chaff-bags; value £l. Suspicion attached to William Price. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette, 1882, page 21.)
Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, from the Victoria Wharf, Tauranga, four coils of black annealed No. 6 fencingwire; the property of the Northern Steamship Company ; value £4. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to
Maoris, who left Tauranga during the night of the 23rd ultimo by the cutter “ Half-caste ” for Rangawai and Te Pima.

Skevington : A boxwood puff-box, a pair of brown-ribbed stockings, a cabin-poclcet, 2 feet long, made of jean, bound with scarlet braid, two large pockets at bottom, an oblong pocket at top, and a scarlet pincushion in centre with fringe, were stolen at the same time.
Supposed stolen between the 7th and 14th ultimo, at Riverton, about twenty pieces of corrugated roofing-iron, 6 feet long, gospel oak and anchor brand; the property of Frederick Smith ; value about £3.
Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from on board the cutter “ Start,” at Queen’s Wharf, Auckland, two sacks containing 4 cwt. of kauri gum ; the property of James Eggenton; value £B.
Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from a buggy in Wellesley Street, Auckland, a nearly-new imitation tiger-skin rug, black on ono side; the property of Dr. Tennant; value £1 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen about the Ist ultimo, at Forest Hill, Southland, 10 feet of common rope, a bag of grass-seed, a liav-fork, and a revolving coulter for a double furrow-plough ; the property of James Donald; value £1 14s.
Stolen between the 11th and 18th ultimo, from the tailrace of the gold-mining claim of Andrew Nicholson, at Round Hill, Southland, a quantity of gold.
Stolen on the 4th or sth instant, from a stable at Harvey’s Flat, Outram, about three hundred dried rabbitskins, two small holes in neck of each skin; the property of James Grant; value £8 15s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the public school at Timaru, a girls’ brown-cloth dolman, considerably worn, brown braid down back; the property of Jane Crawford; value 4s. Identifiable.
