Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.
Miller is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with stealing, between the 20th and 27th ultimo, from Gleeson’s Hotel, Customhouse Street, Auckland, a silver knife and fork; value £3 35.; the property of Patrick Gleeson. Description : About thirty-eight years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, black beard whiskers and moustache clipped short; dressed in dark-tweed suit and hard-felt hat. Ho pledged the stolen property.
On the 7th instant the dwelling of James Keane, Studholme Junction, Canterbury, was broken into, and the following stolen: An old single-barrelled gun with wooden ramrod, screw at end broken; a box of percussion caps, a £-lb. canister of powder, a powder-flask, a pocket-knife, a small silver match-box, five sticks of tobacco, and a nearlynew yellow pocketbook containing several papers; value about £4. Gun, powder-flask, knife, and pocketbook identifiable.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 148.) Stealing a silver watch and jet chain from the Prince of Wales Hotel, Auckland; the property of Mary Ann Elkington: A man, who gave his name as J. J ones, who pawned the watch at Asher’s pawn office, is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with this offence. Description : Supposed English, between thirty-five and forty years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, medium build, fair whiskers, about ten days’ growth of hair on chin; dressed in darktweed suit; respectable appearance. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 6th instant, from the dwelling of Patrick Leamy, Callaghan’s Creek, Grey Road, Westland, a pair of men’s new elastic-side boots, size C, three-star brands on sole of each; value £1 10s. Identifiable.
During the night of the 9th instant the store of Frede ick Kerslian Crowther, at Pihaxna, Taranaki, was broken into, and the following stolen: Two blue-serge coats, size 6; two blue-serge coats, size 5; a blue-serge suit, size 5; five pairs of coloured-moleskin trousers, two pairs of' white-moleskin trousers, a box of merino socks, twelve pairs of brown-cotton socks, three pairs of drab woollen socks, six pairs of lambs’wool ribbed socks, three towels, seventy cigars, a table-knife, a white blanket, twenty packets of cigarette tobacco, six cakes of tobacco, four pairs of elastic-side boots, two pairs of lace-up boots with nails, two black-felt hats, two woollen scarfs, two dozen tins of marmalade, twelve saddle-straps, tour GBD pipes in cases, a bridle, twelve pocket-knives, six boxes of matches, three flannel shirts, a black-and-red Crimean shirt, two cotton shirts, and a silver Geneva watch ; value £29 7s. lOd. Watch, Crimean shirt, and table-knife identifiable.
During the night of the sth instant the shop of W. L. File, at Gisborne, was broken into, and two sovereigns and about £1 10s. in silver stolen. Suspicion attached to William Hitchings. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette, 1882, page 71.)
Stolen on the 14th or 15th instant, from a bedroom in the Clyde Quay Hotel, Wellington, three £1 notes ; the property of Michael McKenna.
Stolen on the 6th instant, from the person of Robert Mather, while drunk in the Argyle Hotel, Gladstone Road, Gisborne, a double-cased silver lever watch, glass broken, “ Makers, Rotherain & Co.” on dial, MD engraved on outside of case, number not known, attached to which was a silver albert chain, small round-link pattern, no bar; value £ll. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 13tli instant, from the shop of On Kee, George Street, Dunedin, a cashmere shawl, a dark-brown satin-cloth dress, two dark-grey waterproof ulster cloaks, a paper box containing six dozen of white-lace edging, a diamond-pattern black-clotli jacket, and 10 yards of black linsey; value £6 19s. Identifiable.
Stolen during the night of the sth instant, from a hut at Goff’s Crossing, near Alford Forest, Canterbury, a single-rein bridle with snaffle-bit, considerably worn, and a nearly-new leather surcingle; the property of Hugh Muirhead; value about 19s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the hotel of William Clapham, at Ngahauranga, near Wellington, a brass telescope about 2 feet long, only one slide, maker Chadwick, Sheffield, whose name is engraved on slide; value £3. Identifiable.
Stolen between the Ist and 4th instant, from the Customs Hotel, Wanganui, a very large double-breasted black-cloth overcoat, nearly new, lined with dark silk, black-velvet collar; the property of Eugene O’Connor; value £5 10s. Identifiable.
A youth, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 24th ultimo, from the shop-door of J. Horne, Nelson Street, Auckland, 201 b. of cake tobacco, Alexander Cameron’s Red Heart brand; value £5. Description: Eighteen years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, medium build; dressed in dark clothes.
Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of Elizabeth McFadyen, Taranaki Street, Wellington, a pair of gold earrings, about the size of a threepenny piece, cross chased thereon, pearl in centre of cross, file-marks on back; value £1 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen between January and June last, from the store of Messrs. Mann and Co., at Tauranga, four quarter-boxes of Cameron’s Venus No. 6 tobacco, each box containing 41 lb.; value £SO. Identification doubtful.
Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the shop of Mr. Treacher, Manners Street, Wellington, a nearly-new black-alpaca umbrella, black-handle with crook, steel band round handle, brass ferrule, steel ribs; the property of Mary Lewis; value 6s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mary Howard, about forty years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair and eyes. She lives in Cambridge Road.
On the 2nd or 3rd instant the Sunday-school at Feilding was broken into, and a box containing about Is. in copper, the property of the Rev. James Jones, stolen. The box has since been found broken open and empty.
Stolen on the 7th instant, from the till in the shop of Jacob Monteith, Manners Street, Wellington, two £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, two half-sovereigns, and about £2 in silver.
Stolen on the 12th instant, from the shop of John Thomas Sapsford, Molesworth Street, Wellington, a small sardine tin with the top cut off, containing a £5 note, four £1 notes, and about Bs. in silver. Sardine tin identifiable.
Stolen on the sth instant, from the dwelling of James Nutting, at Outram, a silver lever watch, maker Johnston, Strand, London, number not known, and a silver chain, bit in centre, and imitation horse-hoof bar; value £5. Identifiable.
Stolen between the Ist July last and the 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of William Gumming, at Hamilton East, Auckland, a gold hunting lever stop watch, No. 72513, “ Kohn Bros. ” on dial, holes for winding and setting hands very close together; value £3O. Identifiable.
