(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 118.) Michael O’Hanlan, charged on warrant with stealing a meerschaum pipe and case from the shop of Charles Butler, at Opunake, has been arrested by Constable Thomas P. Lister, Manutahi Police.

John alias Jack Mitchell, charged on warrant with steal - , from the shop of Stephen Thorpe, has been arrested •by Constable David Shaw, Wairoa Police, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from a dwelling at Gisborne, £6 10s., a plain colonial gold engagement-ring, a brownleather cigar-case, a brown-leather pocketbook-purse with, elastic band, and a brown-leather purse witli steel clasp; the property of Henry Lorde and Thomas Austin. The purse with clasp has since been recovered. Pocketbook-purse identifiable.

Between 6 p.m. on the 28th and 7 a.m. on the 29th ultimo the store of D. M. Orr, at Gisborne, was broken into, and the following stolen: About 235. in silver, two small imitationmeerschaum pipes in cases covered with brown leather, and about 1 lb. of nailrod tobacco; value Bs.

Stolen on the 6th or 7th instant, from the Commercial Hotel, Waverley, a brown-cane riding-crop, with brass ferrule, white-bone hook handle, about half an inch of which is sawn off, kangaroo thong; the property of David Lind; value £1 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Willmott’s Theatrical Company, who were staying in the hotel at the time.

Stolen about the Ist instant, from the Royal Hotel, Herbert, Otago, a violin and bow, light-brown colour, French make, a considerable time in use; the property of Alfred Cook; value £2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Bill Saturday, a native of the colony, a labourer, twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, dark hair and complexion, small dark beard whiskers and moustache; wore dark-tweed paget-coat and vest, bedford-cord trousers, and soft black hat. He went south by train about the Ist instant.

Stolen between the 2nd and 6th instant, from a bedroom in the Shamrock and Thistle Hotel, King Street, Dunedin, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Edward Summer, London, No. 36237, glass and second-hand broken; the property of Frederick Scanlon; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Kate Adams, who was employed as a servant in the hotel. Description: A native of the colony, eighteen years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, dark hair. < Her parents reside at Blueskin.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the shop-door of James Mulligan, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a black-and-grey-striped woollen shawl; value 18s. 6d. Identifiable.

During the night of the 26th ultimo the dwelling of Barnaby Hale, corner of Cashel and Colombo Streets, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen: A dark-grey-check ulster overcoat, torn at right pocket and sewn with black-cotton thread, one button off right side and two off back, lined with liglit-grey material, belt at back, value £1 10s.; and a ladies’ pair of light French-kid lace-up boots, size 2, liand-sewn, twenty-two bright eyelet holes in each side, brass heel-tips, two mohair laces in each boot, value 17s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from a bedroom in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a gold American hunting lever-watch, not much worn, maker’s name and number not known, a gold-mounted hair guard, “T. F. Rohs” engraved on gold plate on centre of guard; the property of Thomas Frederick Rohs; value £3O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the dwelling of William A. Marriner, at Mount Wesley, Auckland, a ladies’ gold ring with two diamonds and two rubies set alternately, value £10; and a ladies’ gold mourning-ring with large diamond, “ In memory” outside, enamelled only three parts round, another gold ring fitted on inside, value £l2. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a Mrs. Liddell and her daughter, Emma Liddell, who were in complainant’s house on the day the rings were stolen. They live at Mititia, North Wairoa.

Stolen on the 12th instant, from a bedroom in the Mechanics’ Restaurant, Willis Street, Wellington, an openfaced silver Geneva lever-watch, considerably worn, “ A. Brandon ” scratched on inside case near keyhole, steel albert-curb-pattern chain attached ; the property of Antonio Brandon ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th instant, from a till in the bar of the Empire Hotel, Kumara, 9s. in silver; the property of Louis Leiglee.

(See Police, Gazette , 1883, page 118.) The watch stolen from the dwelling of Harper Lepper, Lepperton, Taranaki, has been recovered. It was left in his bedroom, from whence it was stolen.

Between 7 p.m. on the 26th and 8 a.m. on the 27th ultimo the shop of John Gaarder, Hazeldeam Road, Sydenham, Christchurch, was broken into, and the following stolen: Five 50-lb. bags of sugar, branded “ YSA & C., 10, 40 lbs., YARRA MILLS, 115 S;” two and a half chests of tea, containing 39 lb. each, branded s.s. “ Catterthem,” FH within diamond, Nos. 109 and 104; and two boxes of tea, containing 11 lb. each, branded W & Co. within double diamond, Nos. 22 and 25; No. 22 box is also marked J.N. 1-7 ; and No. 25, T.M. 17; value £l4 10s. Identifiable.

Between 8 p.m. on the 7th and 8 a.m. on the Bth instant the store of William Coop, at Cooptown, Little River, was broken into, and a pair of men’s grey-tweed trousers, with small red stripes, size 7, stolen; value 18s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 6th ultimo and the 2nd instant, from the dwelling of John Benjamin Williams, Worcester Street East, Christchurch, a large oval gold locket, chased, brightcoloured stone in centre ; a silver brooch, butterfly-pattern ; a silver brooch, ladies’-hat pattern; a silver scarf-pin, formed like the leg of a horse; a small silver compass in a ship’s wheel, with silver pendant, on which is a compass and square; a silver charm like a boatswains’ whistle, a ladies’ gold ring with four or five greenstones set therein, a plain gold keeper-ring, a small gold locket, a volume of “ Tales of the Border,” and a large red-and-green carpet-bag; value £B. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Frederick Wiley, who was staying in the house. Description: English, a clerk, twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, dark hair, no hair on face except small dark moustache; dressed in grey-tweed saccoat and vest and drab-cloth boots. He had been at the Cape of Good Hope, about which he frequently speaks. He left Lyttelton on the 2nd instant by the steamer “ Hauroto” for Wellington.

Supposed stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the person of Henry Fagan, while drunk at Auckland, a new silver lever hunting-watch, ROTHERHAMS, C.B. and figure like two diamonds on dial; value £6.

On the morning of the 30th ultimo the store of R. Ross, at the Sodawater Springs, Kamo, Auckland, was broken into, and the following stolen: Thirty-four tins of lobster, 6 lb. of tobacco, six dozen matches, two pairs grey-tweed trousers and vests, a box of blacking, and two 12-lb. boxes of tea ; value about £4 10s.

(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 102.) Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of William Swanger, Sydney Street, Wellington: Julia O’Byrne was committed for trial for this offence, and sentenced to twelve months’ labour.

Stolen on the 23rd May last, from the person of Gordon Smith, while drunk in the Commercial Hotel, Kaikoura, Marlborough, a brown-leather pocketbook containing seven £1 notes and sundry papers. Pocketbook and papers identifiable.

Between 4 p.m. on the 7th and 8 a.m. on the Bth instant the office of John Chew, off Willis Street, Wellington, was broken into, a cash-box in the office broken open, and two £5 notes and eight £1 notes stolen.

During the night of the 11th instant the store of William Thomas Limbrick, at Te Aute, Hawke’s Bay, was broken into, and the following stolen: Ten corkscrews, white-bone handles, with brush on ends ; eighteen briar-root pipes with black - bone mouthpieces, seven or eight memorandumbooks, twelve packets of pins, four 2-feet rulers, four tins of jam, three bottles of Mellow’s sauce, three bottles of mixed pickles, three packets of cream-laid note-paper, several bottles of pomade, several bundles of lead pencils, several pairs of scissors, four bottles of anniseed oil, and several hair-brushes, combs, and pipes; value £5.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the surgery of Dr. John Stewart, at Helensville, two large volumes of Watson’s “ Practice of Physic,” one volume of Millar’s “ Principles of Surgery,” Ramsbottom’s “ Obsetric Surgery,” Churchill’s “ Midwifery,” Travell’s “ Medical Jurisprudence,” Taylor’s “ Medical Jurisprudence,” Drint’s “ Surgeons’ VadeMecum,” and several other medical works; value about £5. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 1 3th and 16th instant, from the shop of Thomas Wauchop and Co., at Southbridge, Canterbury, a new silver lever hunting-watch, makers Rotherham and Sons, supposed number 2 over 8747 ; value £7 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th or 20th instant, from Sullivan’s boardinghouse, Thorndon Quay, Wellington, a kerosene tin containing about 40 lb. of dripping; the property of Christian Masseel; value 7s.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the shop-door of Hugh Oswald, St. Mary’s Road, Auckland, 41 yards of unbleached tablecloth material, 1£ yards wide; value £2. Identifiable.
