Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

About 3 am. on the !Bth ultimo Jabez Harrison was assaulted by two men, names unknown, in Worcester Street, Christchurch, and robbed of three half crowms. Description : Ist. A bout twenty-five years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high. 2nd. About twenty years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high. Harrison was under the influence of drink at the time.

John Powell, arrested by Sergeant Henry Martin, Auckland Police, for stealing a gold watch, &c., from the Temuka Hotel, Temuka, the property of Thomas Joseph Selious, is identical with John Warden, alias Gallagher, sentenced at Oamaru on the Ist September, 1869, to fifteen years’ penal servitude for wounding with intent to murder. Stolen during the night of the 23rd or morning of the 24th ultimo, from a dwelling at Clinton, a common leather purse containing a cheque for £2O on the Bank of New Zealand, Balclutlia, drawn by W. Charlton in favour of William Edwards or bearer, and five £1 notes ; the property of William Edwards. Purse and cheque identifiable. Also a pair of lace-up boots, a pair of elastic-side boots, and a pair of tweed trousers, size 5 ; the property of David Melrose; value £2 Bs. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th ultimo, from the Railway Hotel, Pleasant Point, Canterbury, an open-face silver lever watch, maker Harris, London, No. 4890, value £4; and a ladies’ gold ring, with one stone and places for two other stones, value £1; the property of Timothy (Jeaney. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of Charley Waitara, Taita, Lower Hult, a nearly-new large white single blanket with blue stripes at ends, and a rug with black stripes about 2 inches wide; value £L 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Henry Watson, English, a labourer, twenty-eight years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, weak eyes, winks frequently, light-brown hair, very little hair on face; supposed to have gone to the Wairarapa.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the Imperial Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ jacket, value £3, since recovered; the property of Mary Coneys The jacket was pledged at Cohen’s pawn office, Princes Street, by a girl about seventeen years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion ; wore dark dress and small black hat. She said the jacket belonged to her mother, Mrs. Stewart, of South Dunedin.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, on the 18th ultimo, from the Panama Boarding-house, Ashburton, a swag, value £1 10s., since recovered; the property of Alfred Smyth. Description : About forty years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, fair beard, whiskers, and moustache ; wore lighttweed coat and trousers. Identifiable.

Stolen between 6 p.m. on the 23tn and 8 a.m. on the 26th ultimo, from the Post Office and Railway Office at Featherston, a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand, a £1 note, a small calico bag containing about 13s. in small silver and copper, two second-class railway-tickets, Nos. 9798 and 9799, from Featherston to Wellington, and a second-class return-ticket, No. 249, from Creytovvn; the property of the Government. Tickets and bag identifiable.

On the 17th ultimo the dwelling of Joseph Reilly, Ponsonby, Auckland, was broken into, and a £1 note, a sovereign, and two half-sovereigns, stolen.

Stolen between the 22nd and 2oth August last, from a shed at the Wharf, Warkworth, a 5-gallon keg of beer; the property of Robert Whitson ; value 15s. Identification doubtful.

Between 5 p.m. on the 27th and 8.30 a.m. ou the 28th ultimo the store of H. B. Sorenson and Co., Lichfield Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and six tins of lobster, labelled “Fresh Star Lobster, Portland Packing Company,” stolen; value ss.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the Provincial Hotel, Stafford Street, Dunedin, a velvet tablecloth, red-and-yellow

pattern, dark-magenta flowers, seven-quarter square border about 6 or 7 inches, principally white; the property of John Sibbald ; value £2 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about forty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, lame in right leg.

Short.—Two of tbe blankets have been found in the possession of Harry Gavine, arrested by Constable Josiah Gilbert Mackey, Lower Hutt Police, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour.

Stolen on the 13th or 14th ultimo, from the dwelling of James Keith, Remuera, Auckland, a silver lever hunting-watch, since recovered? a half-sovereign, and 6s. in silver. Suspicion attached to Christopher Neilson, alias Harry Neilson, who pawned the watch on the evening of the 14th ultimo. Description: Supposed a German, twenty-three years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, very florid complexion, clean-shaved except stiff red moustache ; wore new dark-brown cardigan jacket, dark trousers, and billycock hat.

Stolen between the 14th and 18th ultimo, from the dwelling of Daniel Maher, Ramarama, Auckland, a silver lever watch, No. 38766, “M. J. Mulligan, Wellington, N.Z.,” on dial; a gold albert chain, four-strand small-link pattern, a large hook at one end with a small link on hook; value £lB 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Boyd, who is at present in Mr. Maher’s employment. Description: English, about forty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, black hair and whiskers.

Dttbing the night of the 22nd or morning of the 23rd ultimo the dwelling of George Dixon, Hobson Street, Auckland, was broken into, and Bs. in silver stolen.

During the night of the 22nd or morning of the 23rd ultimo the dwelling of Thomas Wickham, Hobson Stieet, Auckland, was broken into, and sixty sticks of tobacco and about fifty cigars, value £2, and eight or nine shillings in copper, stolen.

Stolen between the 24th and 26tli ultimo, from the whare of Charles Gooch, near the Whau Blockhouse, Auckland, a large blue blanket bound with red, a pair of light-tweed trousers, a white handkerchief, and a stick of tobacco; value 178. Identifiable, except tobacco. Suspicion attached to William Swaby, alias Yorkey, English, a bush man, thiriy-five {'ears of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, slight build, small ight beard and moustache, cheeks shaved.

Stolen between the 16th and 19th ultimo, from the Universal Hotel, McLaggan Street, Dunedin, a ladies’ jacket, value £2, since recovered ; the property of Anne Pavietich. The jacket was found at Lyons and Hart’s pawn office, Manse Street, where it was pledged by a woman who gave the name of Margaret McCluskey. Description : Supposed to be a North of Ireland woman, twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair; wore black jacket and dress, and small black hat. She is believed to be identical with the female who pledged Mary Coney’s jacket.

During the night of the 23rd ultimo the store of Miller and Campbell, Dowling Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and a cash-box, containing a number of overdue bills, promissory notes, dishonored cheques, and sundry papers, stolen. The cash-box was found broken open and empty on the reclaimed land, near Stuart Street, on the morning of the 24th ultimo. Bills, &c., identifiable.
