Horse and Cattle Stealing.

Stolen on the 17th February last, from a paddock at Taulieru, Wellington District, a draught grey gelding, aged, about 15| hands high, branded HB on off side of neck under the mane, hind legs stiff; the property of Darley and Knight; value £SO. Identifiable. The horse is supposed to be at present working in a dray at the formation of a road at the Waimate Plains. William Thompson, alias Dai’key Bill (see Police Gazette, 1880, page 6), who it is said is working on the road-line, knows the horse.

William McCormack, charged on warrant with the larceny as a bailee, at Rangiora, of a bay gelding, the property of John Brock, left Wellington on the 18th ultimo. He may have gone to Wanganui or New Plymouth.

James Wylie, charged on warrant with stealing a bay gelding, at Taui’anga, the property of David 11. M. Bell, is believed to be identical with John Jenkins, charged on warrant with the larceny as a bailee, at Masterton, of a horse-brake and three sets of harness ; the property of John McDonald. (See Police Gazette, 1879, page 136, and 1880, page 73.) Jenkins is also believed to be identical with C. Cary, alias Kelly, charged on warrant with tho larceny as a bailee of a saddle and bridle, the property of John Madden, and suspected of horse-stealing. (See Police Gazette, 1880, pages 53, 54, 64, 74, 82, and 89.) lie is married to a daughter of Mr. John McMaster, of Masterton, but he does not live with bis wife, and is not on good terms with some members of her family. It is said that he is a native of Canterbury.

Michael Fahey, alias Doughty, is charged, on warrant issued by the Akaroa Bench, with the larceny as a bailee, on the 3rd instant, at Pigeon Bay, of a bay mare; value £ls ; since recovered; the property of John Robinson. Description: Irish, a labourer, about twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, fresh flushed complexion, dark hair, no hair on face, about 10|- stone weight, broad Irish accent, slight stammer in speech ; wore dark-tweed suit; carried a tent-swag. It is supposed he has gone to Lyttelton. He said he intended to go to Fiji.

Supposed stolen on the 14th ultimo, from North Rakaia, a bay-mare pony, four years old, about 14 hands high, branded W on near shoulder, slightly lame in near fore-leg, a piece of tether-rope round neck ; the property of James fiastie; value £l2. Identifiable.

(See Police Gazette, 1879, page 146, and 1880, page 103.) The brown mare, the property of George McMillan, stolen from a stable at Lake Sumner Station, has been recovered.

Supposed stolen during the night of the 11th ultimo, from a paddock at Palmerston North, a bay mare, hack breed, aged, about 15 hands high, hind fetlocks white, star on forehead, branded like 5 on near shoulder; and a roan-chestnut mare, hack breed, about seven years old, white mark over root of tail, branded + on lower part of near shoulder; the property of Adam McDonald ; both value £25. Identifiable.

The dark-bay gelding, the property of William Hogan, reported stolen from a paddock at Cambridge West, has been recovered.

Stolen about the 10tli instant, from a paddock at Girder Bridge, Kaiapoi, fifteen cross-bred ewes in lamb, a ram lame in fore-leg, and two stores ; ewes and ram branded IHS with red paint on rump, and a hole punched in ears ; the stores have a red spot on back of head and a black spot on back; the property of John Henwood ; value £l2. Ewes and ram identifiable.

Stolen about the 28th ultimo, at Sawyers Bay, ten four-year-old Leicester sheep, branded CO on back ; the property of James Forsyth ; value £7 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen during the night of the 16th instant, from a paddock at Dry River Station, Wairarapa, a brown gelding, five years old, 15i hands high, dark points, a few white hairs on forehead, lump on bone below eyes, branded like KD conjoined on near shoulder; the property of Alexander F. Christie An old saddle, spur-mark on seat, pommel-chafed, two Ds on each side of front and one on top, web girth, surcingle made of pack-saddle straps fastened with copper rivets, and an old single-rein suafllebridle, were stolen at the same time from a stable near the paddock, believed by the person who stole the horse. Horse and saddle value £ls. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed Irish, a ploughman or labourer, about twenty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, long black hair curled at ends, dark beard and moustache tinged with red, supposed with dye, cheeks shaved, round features, dark-blue eyes, bridge of nose rather sharp, small mouth ; wore grey-tweed shooting-coat, black vest, white-moleskin trousers, and brown hat. He was seen at Whaterangi on the 17lh instant going towards Castlepoint and Napier.
