Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
John Jenkins is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife at Kaikorai, near Dunedin, since December last. Description: Scotch, a shearer and labourer, forty-one years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, dark complexion, black-curly hair turning grey, dark bushy beard, whiskers, and moustache. He was heard of about two months ago at Palmerston South.
Frederick Legge is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with failing, since about the 29th February la?t, to provide for the support of his illegitimate child by Ann Kelly. Description : English, a waiter and billiard-marker, twenty years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, stout build, fair hair, small fair whiskers and moustache ; two very prominent front teeth ; when last seen wore dark-tweed suit and black-billycock hat. lie was until recently employed as night porter at the Royal Hotel, Ashburton.

John Willes, alias Racehorse Jack, charged on warrant with disobeying a summons to answer a charge of making use cf indecent and obscene language, has been arrested by Constable Patrick Bourke, Dargaville Police, and fined £2 and costs.
Edward Hughes is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with disobeying two summonses to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, on the 14th instant, to answer two charges of sly grog-selling. Description : English, a seaman and labourer, but has not the appearance of either, looks about thirty years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, dark hair, small dark moustache, and a very small imperial, a few dark hairs on cheeks and chin : dark complexion, grey eyes, large nose, third finger of left hand wanting ; dresses well; smart active appearance. He kept a brothel in Holland Street. He is identical with Edward Hughes. (See Police Gazette, 1878, page 14.)

It has been ascertained that Samuel Higgins, charged on warrant with deserting his children at Wellington, left Melbourne recently by the “ Sarah Grice ” for London.
William Knox is charged, on warrant issued by the Otaki Bench, with cruelly beating a horse at Otaki on the 9th February last. Description : A native of the colony, generally employed horse-breaking, stock-riding, and labouring, about twenty years of age, 5 feet 7| inches high, light-brown or sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, blue eyes, swaggering gait; associates with Maoris, and speaks their language fluently. He was summoned for the offence, but failed to appear.
Hugh McKay is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with deserting his wife at Auckland since the 20th January last. Description : Scotch, a bush contractor, about thirty years of age, about 6 feet high, brown hair, usually shaved, fresh complexion, high cheek-bones, long features, upright carriage, and respectable appearance; worked in the bush near Dargaville.
Edmund Phillips is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with deserting his wife at Mungaroa, Upper Hutt, since the sth instant. Description; English, a labourer, thirty years of ago, 5 feet 7 or 8 incites high, medium build, sallow complexion, thin features, brown hair, and small fair moustache, third finger of left hand off ; wore dark coat, light plaid trousers and vest, and dark twilled billycock hat. It is supposed lie has gone to Picton.
Adam Thomson is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Dench, with disobeying a summons to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Oamaru, on the 12th instant, to answer a charge of failing to provide for the support of his illegitimate child by Susan Duff. Description : Scotch, a ploughman, about twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, round features, clean-shaved except small fair moustache, stern sulky look; wore dark-tartan tweed suit and elastic-side boots.
