Latest Gallops at Riccarton —Arrowsmith Responsible for a Brilliant Performance — Rossini Shows Decided Improvement.

(Telegraph—Christchurch Correspondent)

The Riccarton contingent for the Auckland R.C. meeting should reach their destination on Saturday. They have all been responsible for nice track efforts, and none of them will be lacking anything on the score of condition. Arrowsmith will be accompanied by Counter Attack and Gning Up, but neither of the latter pair are likely to score unless the opposition is very weak.

Several Riccarton trainers intend taking teams to most of the Otago, Southland and West Coast meetings, so that for the next, few weeks the local tracks will be practically deserted. There was a lot of interesting work done at Riccarton on Saturday morning, especially by horses engaged at Ellerslie. The plough track had been eo heavily watered overnight that it was by no means fast till after the breakfast interval. Arrowsmith again created a sensation, and during the past fortnight his work has been of an exceptional nature. On Saturday he jumped off at the three furlongs peg and ran the first two furlongs in

22 2-ssec., three furlongs in 35 l-ssec., four furlongs in 47 4-ssec., and five furlongs in lmin. He went on another furlong, pulling up, registering lmin. 13 2-ssec. for six furlongs. Vespucci, assisted by Adopted over the last half-mile, ran a real good gallop. Jumping off at. the mile peg he was not at top till he reached the winning post. Galloping very evenly he reached the three furlongs post in 37 3-ssec., four furlongs in 50 2-ssec., five furlongs in lmin. 2 3-ssec., six furlongs in lmin. 15 2-ssec., seven furlongs in lmin. 29sec., and the mile in lmin. 43 l-ssec., finishing up his task very well. Winter Wind, assisted over the first six furlongs by Counter stroke, and brought home by another, ran a mile and a-quarter. The first three furlongs took 38 4-ssec., four furlongs 52sec., five furlongs lmin. 4 2-ssec., six furlongs lmin. 17sec., seven furlongs lmin. 30 l-ssec., mile lmin. 43 4-ssec„ nine furlongs lmin. 56 2-ssec., and the full distance 2min. 10 3-ssec.

Miss Mimic and Winning Hit put up a pleasing performance by reeling off five furlongs in lmin. 3 l-ssec. The former has been galloping in greatly improved style lately. Rossini showed to more advantage than usual by reeling off five furlongs in lmin. 2 2-ssec. He is on the improve, and may be hard to dispose of in the Railway Handicap.

Winter Wind cast a mile and aquarter behind in 2min. llsec., finishing particularly well. He is in much better order than when raced at the C.J.C. meeting. Nightraider has not done a great deal of work lately, but the spell appears to have freshened him up.
