CHRISTCHURCH, Monday
The Riccarton tracks have been very busy during the past week with horses being got ready for the holiday meetings. Since his return from Feilding, R. f J. Mason has given Vespucci and Rossini several gallops, in which the former showed to most advantage. The pair leave in the course of a few days for the north in charge of their trainer. Gloaming will be picked up at Feilding, where he has been located since scoring his dual win. Vespucci has come on a lot since last sporting silk, and promises to play his part' ’’particularly well in the Great Northern Derby. The brothers' Cutts have a useful team in work for the Auckland meet- - ing,-.; including ? Nightraider, Winter Wind, Miss Mimic, Counterstroke, and Winning Hit. V They are all well forward, and -a stake or two should come their way. Winter Wind has got through a lot of good work since the C.J.C. meeting, and should be quite, at his best when stripped at Ellerslie. Miss. Mimic and Winning Hit have both been galloping well, but Nightraider has not been required to do much since racing at Methven. F. Christmas will take Arrowsmith, Counter Attack and Going Up to Auckland. The first-named has been galloping in great style, and a few mornings ago electrified the touts by casting a mile behind in Imin. 44 2-ssec. with well over 9.0 in the saddle. He ran the first three furlongs in 37sec., half-mile in 49 4-ssec., five furlongs in lmin. 2sec., and six furlongs in lmin. 14 3-ssec. From this to the mile post he was eased up, but all things considered it was a brilliant effort. Locally, Arrowsmith has plenty of friends for the Railway Handicap, but with 10.7 in the saddle he is not likely to be well placed in the early stages Counter Attack and Going Up are only moderate, though t,he former has improved considerably x since the C.J.C. meeting. Endure and Mandrake are to go to Otago for the hurdle events at the holiday meetings. Both are useful, and the former can hardly fail to pick up a race or two.
Will Oakland has been on the easy list lately, but is to be recommissioned shortly with a view to racing at the Wellington meeting next month. Amythas is still having an easy time of it, but will shortly be put into light work again, His leg looks all right, and Jones has every hope of winning another race or two with him in the autumn.
Mr. Gordon Fulton has purchased a property on the Yaldhurst Road, where he intends setting up a training establishment. In the course of a few weeks S. Trilford will take over the management of Mr. Fulton’s team. That mentor’s son, A. Trilford, will train at Orari, and has a good few horses to work on. Arrangements have been made for J. Campbell to ride Arrowsmith and other of F. Christmas’ horses at the Auckland meeting.
Glentanner’s recent schooling efforts have been of a more promising nature, and a race should come his way before long.
