WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB.

CONCLUDING DAY.

ALBERT WALLACE WINS LIVERPOOL HANDICAP.

(From Our Wanganui Correspondent.?

The annual meeting of the Wanganui Trotting Club was concluded last Tuesday March 9, when it rained all the morning, but about noon the sky cleared and the afternoon was fine. There was a very satisfactory attendance. The track was very soft, and this prevented anything like fast times, but the racing was of a very interesting description, most of the events being contested by good fields, and the finishes were close. The sum of £23,160 was put through the machine, compared with £18,216 on the second day last vear. the total for the meeting being £49,578, as against £35,708 in 1919, or an increase of £14,270. The meetingmust be written down as a big success, easily the best ever held here, and the club is to be congratulated on the happy result achieved, as it thoroughly deserved all the success scored. The fields throughout the two days were excellent from a quality point of view, and the sport of a very enjoyable description. The conduct of the. racing was decidedly good, and in this connection the secretary (Mr. W. M. Falconer) must be complimented on the splendid work .he did. The handicapper, starter aiid all the other officials all carried out their duties in a manner which reflected credit on themselves and the club, and the result was that trotting got a big lift in popular favour amongst racegoers on this coast, in addition to which the club will come out of it with a handsome profit to help in financing the work to be done on Liverpool Park,- the new track, which should be in readiness for next year s meoting" There’ were only five starters in the opening event, the betting favouring Highwood, but the locally-owned mare, Rosina Elect, went away well from tne limit, and was in front all the way, paying a nice price. The favourite was second. , .. The Peace Handicap was won by the favourite (Petereden) comfortably, Highwood beating Edna for second honours. Hendricksen handled the winner nicely. Conscript led for a mile, and then the favourite went ahead. • Another favourite got home m the Borough Handicap, for which ten started Harold Wilkes, also driven by Hendricksen, taking the lead early and winning practically all the way. Overrate was second, and Nighborn . third. Maggie Girl was fourth. . An outsider in Albert Wallace scored in the Liverpool Handicap, • for which nine started, Marie Tempest being sent out favourite. Albert Wallace and Paul Dufault in turn made the pace, and Albert Wallace, trotting in fine style, came away over the last quarter of a mile, and won from Paul Dufault easily. Prinzora was fourth. There were only five starters in the Stewards’ Handicap, for which Sal Pointer was the most fancied, and she won anyhow from Alphie K., but the latter galloped past the post, and was disqualified, second place going to Taikorea, with Maile third. Still another favourite won the next event the Ballance Handicap, Mangoutu getting home by ten lengths from Speculator and four other starters. There were big margins between the placed horses. The Wanganui Stakes was contested by a field of six, Sea Nymph being the popular pick, and he made good, winning nicely from Van Coronado, the outsider of the party. There were ten starters in the Farewell Handicap,. Henry Tracey being the most in demand, but he would not leave the mark. The winner turned up in Petrova, which mare tackled King Lear in the straight and cut him down in fine style. Proud Elsie was a head away third. J.
