HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.

MUSICAL COMEDY VOGUE. “Going Up,” which made such a direct success when it was produced in Auckland some ten months ago, was chosen for the New Year offering of the J. C. Williamson Musical Comedy Company, and a crowded audience gave unmistakable evidence that the merry aviation play met the requirements of the hour to a nicety, Mr. Alfred Frith was again in his element as Robert Street, the author who had. the greatness of flying thrust upon him, his depiction of abject wretchedness being inimitable, and revealing an innate sense of humour as well as comedy. Mr. Field Fisher had his big moment in the aviation lesson scene, which was marked with uproarious laughter. Miss Grade Lavers and Miss Cecil Bradley, as before, exercised their own special charms in the leading feminine.roles, the former bringing out the haunting melody of “If You Look Into Her Eyes” and the seductiveness of the jingling “Tickletoe” with its witching ballet; and the latter making am undeniable vocal hit in “A Little Birch Canoe,” enhanced with the male chorus effect. Miss Bradley also scored noticeably in the duet with Mr. Cyril Ritchards in “I Want a Determined Boy” and “Do It For Me.’ Mr. William Greene as Gaillard, the French aviator, was picturesquely in evidence, and his song “Going Up,” with the chorus forming an aeroplane, was one of the most popular items. Miss Floie Allen made an alluring little telephone girl, and experienced hands to complete the cast were Mr. George Willoughby, Miss Millie Engler, Mr. Ririe Bush, and Mr. Harry Wotton. Of outstanding merit was a new feature introduced in the revival. This was “Memories,” symbolically danced by. Miss Madge Elliot and Mr. Ritchards. and creating . a regular furore of applause. To-night is the last performance of “Going Up,” and for the final three nights of the season that catchy favourite “High Jinks,” with its “Ting-a-ling-a-ling,” will be produced.
