WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. KILRUSH WINS PRINCIPAL HANDICAP. MOORFOWL ANNEXES WELLESLEY STAKES. Ideal weather conditions prevailed on Saturday for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting, and the attendance at Trentham must certainly have constituted a record. The presence of a strong visiting contingent of horses from both islands created wide interest, and the visitors succeeded in capturing half a dozen races, Wellingtontrained horses accounting for but two events. The favourites fared badly in their respective contests, Kilrush and Tigritiya being the only two of their number to catch the judge’s eye. The former won the Wellington Handicap in convincing style, thereby enhancing his prospects in the New Zealand Cup. Sir George Clifford added another success to his notable list of classic victories as the result of Moorfowl’s win in the Wellesley Stakes, the Chokebore candidate starting a good second favourite for that event. Tigritiya’s success in the Shorts Handicap was well anticipated by backers, who made the son of All Black a firm favourite in the large field which was saddled up to contest the six-furlong race. Speculation was particularly brisk on the totalisator, the sum of £52,183 10s. being handled, as against £35,160 for the corresponding day last year. In view of his double win at the recent Otaki meeting Royal Exchange was elected favourite .for the Seatoun Handicap, with Arch Lassie, Warlike and Prince Hal most favoured of the others. The last-named, who put up 71b. overweight to enable G. Young to accept the mount, went to the front at the start, and though Arch Lassie and Printemps both' made big efforts to catch him in the straight he main-

tained his lead, scoring comfortably by a length and a-half from Arch Lassie, with Printemps third. Matty, who finished well, was fourth. Ten two-year-olds were saddled up for the Taita Handicap, Kildee being slightly better fancied than Caricature, the pair both having shown promising form at the recent Avondale fixture. When the tapes lifted Lucullan was the first to show clear, and with Caricature handy soon established a commanding lead from the other contestants. Once the straight was reached the race had resolved itself into a duel between the pair, an exciting struggle resulting in favour of Lucullan by a neck, the third horse, Blackmail, being three lengths off. Kildee was fourth, followed by Pure Laziness.

A dozen took their places at the barrier in the Wainui Handicap, the prospects of Hurry Up, Lovematch and Risingham finding most favour with backers, the trio being supported in the order named. Sweet Tipperary got the worst of the start, losing several lengths, while Vagabond and Dribble went out to make the running, with Burrangong most prominent of the others. The latter was first to reach the straight entrance, but he was quickly challenged by Dribble and Vagabond, the pair disputing supremacy in a good race to the judge’s box, honours going to Dribble by three parts of a length, Burrangong being a length and aquarter away, third. Bingham was fourth, with Mascot and Hurry Up next.

The twelve acceptors for the Rimutaka Handicap were reduced to a halfdozen as the result of defections, Bonnie Heather, on his winning form at Masterton, being installed an oddson favourite, with Moutoa Ivanova and Falstaff best backed of the others. Falstaff was early in the lead, but was headed by Consultation racing across to the straight entrance, but once in a line for home Falstaff shot to the front, and finishing’ well under pressure stalled off a determined challenge from the fast-finish-ing Bonnie Heather, whom he defeated by half a length after an exciting contest. Moutoa ' Ivanova was a couple of lengths away, third. Consultation was fourth.

Of the dozen which came out to contest the Wellington Handicap, Kilrush was backed down to a short price, while Lucid and Battle Song were most in demand of the others. From a good start Motuihi took charge and led past the stand from Hetaua, Crenides, Kilrush and Lucid. Motuihi continued in the role of pilot along the back of the course, with Hetaua and Battle Song most handy of the others. The trio named were still in the van when heads were turned for home, but once the real pressure was on Motuihi compounded, while Kilrush joined issue with Hetaua, and though the three-year-old battled out the finish in game fashion he had to strike his colours to the favourite, who won a good race by a couple of lengths. Bagdad was two lengths away, third, followed by Pacific Slope, Old Gold and Motuihi. Of the two dozen acceptors for the Wellesley Stakes no less than sixteen were saddled up for the important two-year old classic. A favourite was quickly found in Saima, winner of the Debutante Stakes at the Wanganui spring meeting, while the Chokebore representative Moorfowl was a solid second favourite. Weary Willie and Tessares also were accorded heavy support. Weary Willie and Moorfowl were both prominent in the early stages, the former being in the lead half-way up the straight, but Moorfowl and Right and

Left both threw out strong challenges, a spirited tussle between the trio resulting in favour of Moorfowl by half a length form Weary- Willie, with Right and Left a length away, third. Saima was fourth, and Ennea next.

The October Handicap resulted in a complete rout of the favourite selections, Sweet Memory, Parorangi, Acquittal and Hymarty, none of whom finished in a place. Admyra was always handy and at the finish scored very decisively by a length and ahalf from Rose Wreath, who was neglected on the machine. Kilgour was a couple of lengths away, third, and Probate fourth.

The concluding event, the Shorts Handicap, saw Tigritiya installed a strong first choice, Maioha and Ermine also being accorded solid backing. The public were right in their judgment, for the favourite was always running prominently enough to flatter her backers, and she won at the finish after a great race with Maioha, who was only a head away when the winning line was reached. BoPeep was half a length away, third, and Bonny Briar fourth. The results were: — SEATOUN HANDICAP o£ 200sovs. Seven furlongs. 4— G. WELLINGTON, Monday. Fine weather was experienced for the concluding day of the meeting, which was brought to a conclusion to-day in the presence of a record crowd, sporting enthusiasts being present from all parts of New Zealand. The racing, as on the opening day, was very interesting, and some excellent contests were fought out. The Pearce Handicap provided a fine race, the winner turning up in Hurry Up, who registered a smart perform.ance in leaving the mile behind in the excellent time of lmin. 39 4-ssec. Humbug proved what a slashing colt he . is by winning the Juvenile Stakes from a useful field of two-year-olds. Volo was the only defection from the Champion Plate, leaving five runners, of which Gloaming, who carried over tour thousand pounds out of close on seven thousand pounds invested on the totalisator, was a firm favourite, and for once in a while Desert Gold, who looked very well, was neglected by backers. Affectation, who is in rare buckle just now, was a good second choice with backers. The

race needs very little description. At the start Desert Gold cleared away the tapes, which interfered somewhat with her prospects, as she lost fully half a dozen lengths. Gloaming soon took the lead, and galloping along nicely in front Mr. Greenwood’s champion was never really extended, winning comfortably from Affectation, with Mascot next. Desert Gold was fourth, and Vagabond last. The time was slow, and at no *part of the race was Gloaming really extended. At the conclusion of the race Gloaming was led on to the lawn, where the handsome Gold Cup was presented to Mr. G.' D. Greenwood amidst the cheers of the crowd, while a similar compliment was paid by patrons to Desert Gold.

In the Spring Trial Stakes Bonetter’s name was missing from the correct card, but the Boniform gelding won very easily. In the final event of the meeting, the Nainai Handicap, 80-Peep and Hetaua were the choice of backers, and while holding an excellent position a few hundred yards from the post 80-Peep crossed her legs and fell head over heels. Luckily, L. Morris hung on to the reins, and when the other horses had passed both rider and mare were found to have escaped injury, which is remarkable, for several horses were behind 80-Peep when the accident occurred. The starting of Mr. C. O’Connor was highly meritorious, while Mr. R. B. Lusk’s placings from the judge’s box were admirable. Mr. A. E. Whyte, secretary, and his assistant, Mr. J. Griffiths, had all the details working splendidly, and the meeting will long be remembered as a very successful one. The race trains were well filled, and it is questionable whether more people have ever been carried to Trentham by the railways as was the case to-day. The results were: — ROSENEATH HANDICAP of 200sovs. Four furlongs. 2— I. G. Duncan’s ch f Blackmail, 2yrs, • by Bezonian — Historlette, 7.12 (L. Morris) 1 5 —V. and E.
