AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. The A.R.C. spring meeting bids fair to be a record one. Recent racing has possibly thrown very little fresh light on it, but there are such useful horses engaged in each department that we are sure to have much to interest us. The weather continues good. The course is. in splendid condition, and the first of the visitors have arrived from Hawke’s Bay in Matatane, for the Guineas, and Guanaco, a jumper, and others will follow during the next few days. The running of Marqueteur and Depredation at the Waverley meeting would point to the last-named as being the better of the pair at their weights for the Mitchelson Cup. The race may, however, improve Marqueteur most. Alteration and Detroit, the last-named well treated on his best form, did not race at Waverley. Some Boy has been kept to working on the tan and is very fresh, and perhaps a bit gross. Bedford has been doing nicely at headquarters, as also Mullingar, who has, however, lightened up a good deal. Windorah, All Talk, Meltschikoff, Killard, Tabasco and Lady. Energy have been doing good work, and good reports come to hand concerning Gold Kip, Ohinewairua and Waiuta, while Housewife is reported to be going on the right way at Takapuna, Uncle Ned at Avondale, and King Lupin and Mangamahoe at Cambridge. Alteration is mentioned as likely to be piloted by H. Gray, but why he did not race at Waverley we are not informed. The majority of the twenty left in, probably threefourths if not all, will have the last payment made for them in what looks an open race.

The two-year-olds in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes may see a reduction on October 31, when, the final forfeit is due, and no doubt will, but Weary Willie, though beaten at Trentham twice, each time by good ones in Moorfowl and Humbug, showed he could get five furlongs well, and Lucullan’s win was a good enough one to bring him into prominence. There is no doubt Caricature is consistent, and though sore she ran her best race perhaps at Trentham, and for a beginner it was a good performance on Lucullan’s part to beat Caricature. While we expect Landslide to about hold his own, we believe he will find the opposition stronger than it was at Avondale. We are not anticipating anything like such a formidable display on the part of Dunedin as some people, who have suggested that the colt has the race at his mercy. He was well tuned up for the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick, and an easy course has been taken with him since he arrived in Auckland. A big loose fellow, he is the sort that time should assist. Potona and Wolomai, Jaffna, Arch Margot, Miss Muriel, Jolie Princess, Lucon, Ridicule, Our Hope, Lovelight and the Heather Mixture —-Pauleen filly are trained at headquarters. Perhaps the first-named pair may run well, but public form points to Landslide, Weary Willie, Lucullan and Dunedin, and the last-named seems the least likely to be favoured by the down-

hill and the bend in the course. Lucullan was trained right-handed and raced brilliantly on the straightaway course at Trentham. Hetaua seems to be the best of the Great Northern Guineas lot, and Crenides and Matatane hail from the same quarter, and Rosewreath has been racing well. The field for that race will show some diminution, and perhaps Tinokaha, Archie and Canowindra will be Auckland’s best representatives in order on the day, and if the first-named has improved as he promised to" do he may get a bit of the place money. __ Mr. McManemin gave us the weights for the minor events on Tuesday morning, and on Friday owners will decide upon what they will leave in. It may be too much to expect Mill o’ Gowrie to make good in her first essay as a hurdler and with her weight, but Munster is within 31b. of her, and though he is fast over the distance still some of those below should beat him. Entente Cordiale, Step and Guanaco are some further down that well. In the Flying Esthonia (handicapped up to his best form), Tabasco, Ohinewairua, Hineamaru and Rathlin, and Lord Kenilworth in particular,' read nicely placed in what looks likely to furnish a fair field. In the Shorts Handicap Taiami, Queen Abbey, Demagogue, Hineamaru and Comedy Prince are slippery ones that would give the topweights, Silver Link and King Lupin, a race, all being well with them, but it is rather soon to expect Comedy Prince to be at his best. There are some likely ones in both the lastnamed races which may have improved since last year. No Surrender has what looks like a big weight in the Hunters’ Steeplechase, but he stands out from the rest, just as Waimai, with the same weight, stands out from most of those in the Onehunga Steeplechase. Signature and Khartoum are a likely pair, as also is Tirau, and if he can be got over the top fence where once the old water jump frightened him. Old Te Onga may give a good account of himself. There are 58 in the Hobson Handicap, and well may the reduced list be awaited, though there are a number engaged that in the matter of class overshadow the rest.
