AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. LORD ROSE WINS SPRING . HANDICAP. Fine weather favoured the Auckland Trotting Club on Saturday for the first day of their spring meeting, which marked the opening of the new season. The gathering was very largely attended, the gate returns being three-fourths of the amount taken on the best of summer meeting days. The course was in good order and the average of the fields fair, but in some races smaller than might have been expected. Horses came from different parts of the country, and Auckland-trained and owned horses had a very’ satisfactory innings. The management left nothing wanting, under the watchful eye of Mr. C. F. Mark. The races were started punctual to time and satisfactorily by Mr. F. McManemin, Mr. O’Connor being at Masterton. The stipendiary steward, Mr. H. Davey, had aq easy time. One horse was not allowed to start because the owner had not registered in the usual way. An accident during the afternoon, after the horses were out on the track, resulted to Tim Doolan, who was withdrawn and the money of investors returned —not a usual practice, but one which met with the appreciation of those concerned. The sum of £35,400 was passed through the totalisators, an increase of £12,631 10s. over last year. Gova led the field in the Maiden Trot to the end of a mile and a-, quarter, but Marble Hall, the favourite, from the back mark, sticking to his work, got up and won by two lengths from the second favourite, Welcome South, Malmsbury, an outsider, getting third about the same distance away, the trio being well clear of the other starters. Maggie Girl secured fourth position. Handicapped to trot 4min., Mr. W. G. Bright’s gelding did 3min. 54sec., which was too good for the limit horses. There were eighteen runners. The Improvers’ Trot resulted in a dead-heat between Kewpie and Mount Albert, the fourth and eighth fancies respectively. Dora Derby, the favourite, made a very good attempt to get through from the 60yds. mark, and finished handy to the limit pair named. The Spring Handicap, of 45050v5., only drew s'x starters. Lord Rose, owned by Mr. K. Smith and trained

and driven’ by S. Groat, was favourite in a good betting race and led practically all the way. Star Queen, who was nearly as well supported, was beaten for second place by the fifth fancy, Oruarangi, in the run home, but there was only a difference in the times of the first and third of 2 2-ssec. Trooper Dillon was a good fourth, while Pitiroa and Steel Bell brought up the rear, the last-named failing to leave her mark quite as promptly as she should. The leaders went too fast for her. The Onehunga Handicap had but six runners, and though King Capitalist tried hard to wrest the lead from Bronze Patch, the second favourite, the last-named responded to every challenge and won handily. Gold Boy was a hundred yards away, while Hint, the favourjte, never flattered her admirers and Billy Parole showed nothing of his reputed form, so that Bronze Patch managed to win in time he was set to do. The Stewards’ Handicap was another six-horse field owing to an accident to Tim Doolan, who was allowed to be withdrawn after being on the course and backed on the machine, as it was found that he was really hurt. Shanna Golden was favourite. Eccentric made a fair attempt to get the lead, and when he finally succeeded in heading off Hiram Galindo and looked like winning Dorothy Dimple, who was on the same mark with him at the start, drew up in the straight and beat the old fellow home. Eccentrio is getting white and has lost a lot of his dash. He had not had the hopples on for months, and was in the saleyard the previous day. The Mountain Trot, in harness, saw the back-mark mare Lady Park favourite, with Wonderland, who has disappointed and also surprised Auckland audiences previously, second fancy, Rio Grande being also very solidly supported, with Overrate, Lobster and Kirikiriroa next in order of support, Rio Grande and Wonderland would not settle down, and Overrate, beginning well, drew away with Lobster, but Lady Park, doing better work than she has previously accomplished, got through and won in 3min. 37sec. in good style, with Lobster and Overrate in the places. Alf. McKinney, the favourite in the October Handicap, never flattered his supporters, while Derby Dillon only went well for part of the distance in the race. Dorothy Dimple, who was penalised 12 yards, failed to reproduce her form of earlier in the day. Gold Girl, with a fine burst of speed, had the race in hand a long way-from home, and none of the. others pacing up to their previous best she won by three lengths from Waverley, who looks well and should get a race soon if he stands. The business of the day concluded with the Electric Handicap, for which Dera Derby, who appeared lame, was nevertheless made favourite on her previous showing. Kempsey, the second favourite, with considerably less on his chance, led practically all the way after they had got settled fo work going out of the straight, and crossed the line with two lengths to spare from Treanac, Galindo Belle, who came again in the straight after losing her place, being a length off, third.
