WANGANUI.

Marton Form Reviewed—Successful Horsemen at Marton —G. Price’s Team for Wanganui Meeting—Satisfactory Nominations for Wanganui Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. WANGANUI, Monday. W. Rayner took Zola, Fafce, Rose Queen and Zela to Marton. The heavy state of the going prevented Zola from being seen to advantage, though he ran two good races. Farce won the Electric Hack in a style which points to this filly as being likely to do well this season. She beat two or three good hacks, and was running on well at the finish. Rose Queen was not started owing to the state of the going, but she was in capital fettle, and if she goes on the right way in the interval will be handy in whatever she starts at the Wanganui meeting, as she appears to be gradually improving. Zela galloped well in the Railway Handicap for five furlongs, but the heavy going seemed to stop her over the last bit.

The winning jockeys at Marton were: L. Morris and A. McCormick two wins each, A. McDonald, A. Ward, J- Wairoa, R. Reed, B. Shields, A. Reed, Adams, R. Hunt, B. H. Morris, H. McSweeney, H. Young, and L. Nodder. Several of the runners at Marton will be seen to more advantage at Wanganui, some because the going will no doubt be better here, and two or three because bigger efforts will be made to get them home first. G. Price will have a team of five at the Wanganui meeting, including "Warplane (a Guineas candidate), Nursing Sister and Ermine. The Highden horses are all in good form, and they should pick up a race or two here. There is every prospect of the Peace Ball which the Wanganui Jockey Club intends holding on the 26th inst. being a great success. The committee intend to spare no efforts to make it a most enjoyable function. H. Lorigan broke his collarbone when Want fell with him in the Victory Steeplechase at Marton. Flight-Commander Robertson, of H.M.S. New Zealand, was present at the Marton races on Wednesday. He was entertained at luncheon by the stewards. The hurdler Vacuum was put up to auction at Marton on Wednesday, but the son of Advance was passed in at 75 guineas. H. Rayner intends bringing Carmel Arch, Simon, Signorella, Nemaline and a two-year-old in from Waverley for the Wanganui, meeting. The three first-named are in capital fettle just now, and will be hard to beat here. The very satisfactory nominations received for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting augurs well for the success of that gathering. All of the events have filled well, and the prospects are that the racing will be full of interest. There is every likelihood of the field for the Guineas being fairly good, while the Debutante States (for two-year-olds) has drawn excellent entries, no fewer than 19 being engaged. It is fully expected that the field in this event will be a large one, and such good reports have been received as to the quality of the youngsters in work up and down the coast that great interest will be taken in this contest, as the locally-trained two-year-olds are apparently above the ordinary so far as can be judged. The weights for the handicap events will make their appearance on Friday next. Mr. Alf. Morse has been appointed starter for the Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club’s annual meeting on Labour Day. Mr. Morse has been very successful in his manipulation of the barrier since he took on the game, and his services are being sought by a number of clubs. A filly which should be worth watching at the, Wanganui meeting is Nursing Sister, a three-year-old daughter of Solferino, owned by Mr. J. Goring Johnston. She is a nice cut of a filly and is evidently possessed of a fair share of pace. She is engaged in the Maiden here. The steeplechase events at the Wanganui meeting have filled well, and they should both provide good races. The hurdle races have also drawn good entries, and are likely to be well contested. F. Tilley failed to win a race at Marton, where he had Tempo, Arrowfield and Oratress racing. The latter was sent out favourite for the Railway, but never looked like winning. The soft going no doubt prevented her from showing up better. The Fordell stable has Oratress, Tame Fox, Client, Tempo and the two-year-old half brother to Client engaged at Wanganui. T. Long intends giving his two two-year-olds a run in the Debutante Stakes. They are both coming on nicely, and have been given some practice at the barrier, shaping very well.

W. Rayner’s two-year-olds Listowel and Yolande have also been tried at the barrier, and they both hop out smartly. Listowel is the one which gives most promise of the local youngsters so far. Fourteen New Zealand Cup candidates are engaged at the Wanganui meeting including Speechmaker, Mascot, Volo, Nobleman, Maioha, Rose Pink, Lucid, Affectation, Bonny Briar, Hurry Un, Warlike, Bingham, Warstar and Rose Wreath. Vance is being kept at steady work, but the daughter of Advance does not appear to have yet thrown off the effects of the trouble which led to her being spelled a short time ago. She is engaged at. the Wanganui meeting, and may brighten up in the interval.
