HAWKE’S BAY.

Death of Red Pepper—New Zealand Cup Candidates Maioha and Hetaua Showing Good Form —L. Wilson's Steadily Increasing Team — Brood Mare Class Shipped to Lyttelton— Trotting Club to be Formed at Hastings — Trials to be Recommissioned Shortly. NAPIER, Saturday. Red Pepper, the three-year-old son of Demosthenes and Gipsy Belle, died last Sunday at Woodville from the after effects of a chill that he had contracted some time previously. Red Pepper was bred by Mr. A. J. Toxward, of Palmerston North, and was purchased last year by Mr. T. H. Lowry, whose property he was at the time of his passing out. Last season Red Pepper lined up for business upon eight occasions, and was returned a winner in a brace of his attempts, the Onslow Stakes at the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting, and the Plunket Nursery at the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting being the two events that were annexed by him. Trainers A. and K. Quinlivan are quitting the profession that they have been following for some considerable time past, and are both going on the land, as they have just concluded the purchase of a farm, which they intend to occupy at once. Fairy Gold, Suratura and one of Mr. F. Ormond’s brood mares have been booked to visit Demosthenes, and as Mrs. M. A. Perry, the owner of the English-bred sire, has decided to limit his services to five outside mares, there is only another vacant subscription to be booked to him, as Mangaroa is already at Otatara to be mated with him. Maioha, Hetaua and Tropical are showing good form on the track at Hastings at present, and it looks as if they will shortly get on the winning list. Shortlands, the stables at one time occupied by T. F. Quinlivan at Hastings, which have been secured by Luke Wilson for training purposes, is being renovated and added to, and in addition a cottage for the use of stable lads is being erected. Wilson anticipates being able to shift into his new quarters some time next week. This trainer has in hand at the present time for the executors of the late Mr. W. J. Douglas Maioha, Hetaua, Koliu, Sunny Smile, Tropical and Harangue, and for other clients Dribble and Reporua, the latter being a five-year-old gelding by Sylvia Park. Wilson expects a new student to arrive at his establishment shortly from her birthplace (Te Mahanga Station)—a three-year-old filly by Demosthenes out of Ikon. Should the railway be available, L. Wilson intends to take Dribble, Hetaua and Reporua to Dannevirke to fulfil their engagements at the spring meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club, but if this means of transit are barred by the authorities the trio will remain in their boxes.

Heis, the two-year-old son of Demosthenes and Lady Cilia, and Treis, the two-year-old colt by Demosthenes out of Golden Ball, who some time back were purchased by Mr. A.

B. Williams from their breeder, Mrs. M. A. Perry, have had their names changed to Gas Bag and Chryseston respectively. Class, one of Mr. W. G. Stead’s brood mares, was’ shipped to Lyttelton yesterday, for the purpose of being mated with Mr. G. L. Stead’s sire Nassau. The formation of a trotting club in Hastings is now being started, and an application will be made shortly for a permit, which it is considered will probably be granted. The support being accorded the meeting is of a most encouraging character, and a meeting to further the ends in view will be held at an early date. Trials, who has been off the scene for a considerable time, is going along all serene in his retirement, and his owner, Mr. J. W. White, intends .to have him put into active commission once again in the very near future. D. O’Meara, who, for a number of years, had charge of the thoroughbred stock on Te Mahanga Station, is now in charge of Mr. P. P. Neagle’s Australian-bred stallion, Wormwood, and, as might be expected, has the son of Malster and Marie Corelli looking just as perfect as could be desired. Mr. H. M. Campbell, who intends to stand for the Hawke’s Bay seat at the forthcoming general election, is well known in the world of sport as a breeder and owner. About one of the best of later years that he has had carrying the Campbell of Argyle tartan jacket and cap is Dusky Eve, who last season won £1790 in stakes, his most important win being the Wanganui Cup (1| miles) in February last.
