WELLINGTON NOTES.

(By

“Lorgnette.”)

WELLINGTON, July 8. After a highly successful tour of the Dominion, the J. C. Williamson Royal Comic Opera Company opened a nine nights’ farewell season at the Grand Opera House last Saturday evening. During the season the four pieces produced during the tour will be revived. “Katinka” will be staged for three nights, “Maytime” for two nights, “Oh! Oh! Delphine’ two nights, and “The Pink Lady” two nights. Judging from the booking for the season it is an assured success. This combination have always established a great reputation for themselves by their first-class performances, and the pity of it is that the headquarters management could not arrange another tour of the Dominion with some new pieces or a

series of revivals. They only had the scores, scrip, scenery and dresses to send across, the artists being already on the spot. It is still worth consideration.

The talented Digger Divisional Pierrots opened a tour of the chief centres of New Zealand at the Grand Opera House, when they gave two decidedly novel and original entertainments last Thursday and Friday to large and enthusiastic audiences. “Professor” Barraden gave what is almost sure to be his farewell appearance in Wellington at the Grand Opera House on Monday evening. He was to have appeared in the Town Hall on Saturday night, the 28th inst., in opposition to “Professor” Anderson, both alleged hypnotists, but the Mayor refused to let Barraden appear in the Town Hall, hence the change of venue. Barraden’s and also Anderson’s shows were huge jokes to the majority of the audiences, and the quantity of missiles thrown on the stage ranged from a scrubbing brush to the familiar rotten egg. We have recently had a number of “snide” shows fostered on to us —gulling the public all the time. It is just about time that the authorities stepped in and stopped the frauds that are touring the Dominion and obtaining money through a wrong channel.
