DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. Favoured with beautiful weather, the Dunedin Jockey Club opened their autumn meeting on Thursday, February 13. There was a very large attendance, and speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £27,372, compared with £23,272 last year. There were no withdrawals from the Autumn Hurdles, the nine coloured on the card going to the post. The top weight, Jeannot, was installed a better favourite than Vascular and Calma. Jeannot and Calma made all the running until the straight was reached, when Vascular put in his ..claim, and catching the leaders at the distance, won by a length from Jeannot, with Calma three-quarters of a length further back. Through the withdrawals of Fleetham, Dorian and Wild Night a field of five was left to contest the Ladbrook Handicap. Eleus was entrusted with the bulk of the money, while Red Tape and Thistlecrown also had friends. Thistlecrown went, to the lead when they were, released, and the son of Rokeby was still in command of affairs at the straight entrance, when he retired from the scene. Red Tape then went to the front, and romping home in fine style won easily by four lengths from the favourite, with Lady Edith three and a-half lengths away third. A field of six was saddled up to contest the Champagne Stakes, the withdrawals being Macduff, Anton, Steepholm and Primum. The Chokebore representative Miss Mimic was installed a warm favourite, with the bracketed pair Sunart and Kilroy next in demand. The field was bunched for two furlongs, when Miss Mifnic went to the front, and, striding along nicely, won by a length and a-half from Kilroy, who finished two lengths in front of’ his stable companion,. Sunart. The Dunedin Cup produced the fine field of 16, Almoner and Kilrush declining their engagements. When the machine closed it was seen that Heathercote had been entrusted with the most money, Melee, Glendower, Punka, Burrangong and Rorke’s Drift being supported in order, while the remainder did not claim much attention at the hands of backers. The start was a good one, except that Royal Star lost’ some ground. Heathercote was quickly in the lead, and attended by Rose Pink and John Barleycorn made all the running until the final stages were reached. Rorke’s Drift here took a hand, and followed by Linden and Glendower led into the straight, and in an exciting finish the top weight beat the fast finishing Glendower by a short half length, with Punka a length further back third.

Cerberus and Red Eagle were not asked to fulfil their engagements in the Apprentices’ Plate, and of the field of 10 which lined up Wild .Night was made a pronounced favourite, and the Windwhistle colt fulfilled all demands by taking charge at the distance and winning by half a length from Lady Links, with Moneymusk three length’s away third. The Publicans’. Handicap produced a field of 13, the scratchings being Kilboyne, Mortham, Winter Cherry, Bon Spec and Rokelaine. Kilbrogan was made favourite, with Killjoy and Daytime next in . demand. Lionskin’ led from barrier rise, and, despite a strong challenge by Kilbrogan, lasted long enough to win by half a head. This was the second product of Counterfeit to win during the day, Miss Mimic accounting for the Champagne Stakes earlier in the afternoon. Tyne was made favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap in a field of eight, the withdrawals being Thaddeus, Palamon and Daringdale. Aycliffe made most of the running, and With Gunrest and Sedd-el-Bahr led into the straight. At the distance Tin Soldier came through and won by a length and aquarter from Marianne, who was ’ a neck in front of Gunrest. : The Berwick Handicap, for which there were seven acceptors, concluded the day’s proceedings, the scratchings being Fleetham, Eleus, Red Tape, Dorian, Wild Night and Sea Maid. Sleepy Head was favourite, but after making most ,of the running she was compelled to strike her colours to the long-priced Lady Superior, who won by half a length, with Rokelaine four lengths away third. An inquiry was held regarding alleged interference with Sleepy Head and Rokelaine by W. Robinson, the rider of Osterman, but was adjourned till later to secure the evidence of other riders. The results were:— HANDICAP HURDLES. One mile and three-quarters. o—W B. Clarkson’s b g Vascular, aged, by Vasco — Pellicle (L.
