THIRD DAY.

TINOPAI WINS JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. The meeting was concluded in fine weather save for a heavy tropical downpour which started before the fourth race, making the track, which was in fast condition up to that stage.

slower for the remainder of the day. Speculation was very keen, no less a sum than £50,133 being handled at the totalisators, bringing the total for the two days originally fixed for the summer meeting to £98,887, this being an increase of £10,910 over the total of last year. Added to the turnover on Thursday, which amounted to £34,933, the sum of £133,820 was handled for the three days, the total increase being £14,897. The racing was interesting, and most of the fields were up to the average. The stipendiary officials of the club each had cause to be satisfied with the results generally. There were few accidents throughout the meeting, and none serious.

For the opening event, the Moana Handicap, the Hawke’s Bay-bred Ohinewairua, by San Fran from Maid of Astolat, was favourite, carrying top weight. Benzine and Pretty Bobby were next in demand, the trio being a long way better supported than all the rest put together—indeed, the two first-named were entrusted with nearly half the money pooled. Ohinewairua justified the support accorded her, and so did Pretty Bobby, as they were first and second, but Benzine did not get a good run. Golden Petal ran better than on the

opening day and finished third, but Ohinewairua outclassed the field. ’

Gluterreno has never represented good hurdle form, on the contrary, but was picked out as much the best of those engaged in the Takapuna Hack Handicap Hurdles, second and third choices being Lady Lyddite and Mahzoltov. The last-named, who has been raced alternately on the flat and over hurdles, but who had not won a race for a considerable time, showed a bit of her old-time jumping dash

and lasted long enough to win by a length from Lady Lyddite. Signa-

ture was third. The time, 2min. 48sec., was the fastest run on the

course for a mile and a-half. Over the same distance the winner two years ago twice broke 2min. 45sec. at Feilding.

A sleet was falling when the Sub-

urban Handicap was started. Ring Lupin, the favourite, never looked dangerous. Lightning, who was secand in demand, and Bellacity, who

beat her on the second day, practi-

cally had the race to themselves, ' Lightning winning by a length. Taiamai and Queen Abbey were the next to finish. In a heavy betting race Spanner and Bedford, neither of which had been worked over a long distance or raced since the season began in Auckland over other than short courses, were each very solidly supported for the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, the distance of which extended to mile and a-quarter and 110 yards. Windorah carried within £2OO of the amount invested on Spanner, and then came Form Up, on whom Gray had the mount. The other five runners were at liberal prices. The track was rendered much slower in consequence of heavy rain preceding the event. Of the four best supported not one got a place. It was supposed that Tinopai’s weight in the going would anchor her, but she won in good style from Athens 11., Killard and Waiuta following the pair of dividend payers home. Killard was beaten a good way from home, but Athens 11. finished ,on, and with a bit better luck might have scored. It was, however, a fine performance on the part of Tinopai, who carries her

eight years lightly. A good reception awaited the daughter of Stepniak;. With all his weight the Hawke’s Bay two-year-old Hetaua was sent out for the Hobson Handicap and made a very strong. favourite. He just failed to concede Canowindra 351 b., but neither had a chance with the Lucullus filly Mistress Biddy, who began fastest and led all the way, winning by two lengths. Finkop and Princess Charming, the other runners, did not shape well. The Waikato stable was again in luck. King Abbey was less fancied by backers than Caballero and Independence for the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, but neither of the lastnamed pair showed up, and King Abbey, always out in a prominent place, beat the outsider Gold Kip by a length and a-quarter, with Garryowen three-quarters of a length away in third place, the trio being the topweights.. Benzine, who carried 71b. overweight, got fourth. It. was his second start on the day. Master Lupin, giving nearly 3.0 to Tenacious and 71b. to Loyal Arch, was much better supported than they were for the Waiwera Handicap Hurdles. They carried a little more than Golden Grafton, who won with a little to spare from Tenacious, who had Loyal Arch and Master Lupin in trouble from the last hurdle home, battling it out with the pair after leading most of the distance. Backers went a little more solidly for Hineamaru for the Anniversary Handicap than for Mill o’ Gowrie and Hyllus, but she misbehaved herself at the post and delayed the start by refusing to take her place, preferring a position nearer the rails, where she was ultimately started. For a time she was in front and ran a fair race, but Hyllus, Mill o’ Gowrie and Meltchikoff and Munster each beat her, Hyllus again phowing his partiality for the soft going.. Kilbeggan, the bottom weight, had every chance and led for part of the way, but faded out. Lord Kenilworth was amongst the starters, but never looked like a winner at any stage.
