SECOND DAY.

ALISON CUP WON BY TINOPAI.

The attendance was very good for the second day of the meeting, whica was really the spring programme sandwiched between that of the summer one. Speculation was keen and the sum of £34,933 was handled at the machines, making £83,687 for the two days, an increase of £3,548 over the corresponding events of last year. The day was fine and the course in faster condition than on the previous day, and again there were some interesting contests and fair fields, though some were on the small side.

Backers went so solidly for the Roulston Bros.’ Coronet gelding Flowing Bowl for the Melrose Handicap, in a field of fifteen .that he ended up. ’ a little! over an even-money chance, and fully justified the support he received by winning in easy fashion from Formalin, who cut Hessian out of second place. The last-named, carrying 111 b. overweight, was fourth fancy and ran her best race to date, but Flowing Bowl carried too many guns for them all, and Penona and Rangi Aroha, the second and third fancies, at the weights had no chance. Miss Ellice, as on the first day, was again fourth, after leading the field in company with the winner. There were only five runners for the Borough Handicap. Lightning was made favourite, Queen Abbey (after a big drop) second, and then Bellacity. The last-named got up in the last few strides and after a dingdong go beat Lightning half a head, Taiamai, five lengths off, beating Queen Abbey for third place. Don Patch failed to go the pace, which was all on, the distance being run in Imin. 3sec.

Notability, the favourite for the Ponui Handicap Hurdles, was beaten fairly easily at the finish by the Taranaki gelding Golden Grafton, and though Notability showed better form than all the rest, he met Golden Grafton on worse terms than on the first day, when the last-named fell too early to suggest that he was inferior or better than Notability. He now proved himself superior. Both fenced rather unevenly. Almadale was quite outpaced. The punters singled out Tinopai for the Alison Cup as if she were the best of good things, and the totalisator indicated this. The result also justified their support. She was led for part of the way by Analogue, who looks fresh, but is not ready and is hard to keep on his legs. Along the back Tinopai was going nicely and headed Form Up, All Talk and Analogue, and was allowed to run along and won by a length from Form Up, All Talk being a head away, third. Waiuta, who met with disappointments in the first four furlongs, which sent her to the rear of the field, had to come on the outside, and she was finishing well and got close up, fourth, with All Over and Lady. Energy next. Athens 11. and Tabasco fell when racing about the middle of the field along the back. Form Up, who was second selection, carried 31b. overweight, and four of the other starters also. Waiuta runs with bad luck.

It did not surprise many when Hetaua was scratched for the Cambria Handicap with 10.7, but he would have been most solidly supported if he had started. As it was No Mistake and Canowindra were the best backed. Form work out right, Mistress Biddy, who had run second to Hetaua on the first day, winning by a neck from Finkop, who was a fresh candidate, while Princess Charming was only a head away, with Heathermoon and Canowindra next in order.

Hineamaru and Independence were supported for the Vauxhall Hack Handicap as though there were no others engaged. Independence ran indifferently, but Hineamaru, who is not back to form yet, won, and it was due to Deeley’s careful handling of the filly that she worsted the gelding Step, who made a fine surprise run which landed him in front but which

he failed to sustain when it came to the run home, Hineamaru winning by a length. Caballero, who led part of the way, was three lengths away, third, Revenue fourth and Sanacre fifth. Empire would not go near the barrier, and reared over and fell with his rider when two chains back from it just at the moment the horses were despatched. He has been ruled out from starting again at the meeting. Thrace proved too good for Loyal Arch over the concluding stages of the Tiri Hurdles, in receipt of 31b., and Tenacious split the pair, a length each way being the verdict of the judge. Thrace really won handily enough. Loyal Arch rapped one hurdle pretty hard. Otter was well beaten off, and the old gelding has lost all form apparently.

The public backed Downham much more solidly than King Abbey for the Cheltenham Handicap, but over the last couple of furlongs Bedford, third fancy, had the measure of the field and won by a length from Stilts, who came too soon to see the last little bit out successfully. He, however, beat Rockfield, who made the early running. Bedford was suited by the going, and Ryan rode him nicely. The race was run in Imin. 15sec.
