AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

WINTER MEETING. We are within nine days of the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting, and the acceptances for the Great Northern Hurdle Race, Great Northern Steeplechase and Cornwall Handicap indicate that we are to have some first-rate contests for those particular events, and it can be assumed that though the final payments for the events named may show some reductions in the size of the probable fields that they may be numerically as large, taken all round, as in the best of previous years. We shall have another declaration of the intentions of owners this week, as the final payments are due on Friday night, at which time the acceptances for the minor handicaps declared on Monday will also be received. With Wanganui form giving some guide, so far as quite a number of the runners there are concerned, the busy punters may find it easier to make selections than they have been doing since the weights appeared, though many have been taking what look like very short prices. The defection of quite a number of horses from the jumping races in Wanganui that received support from early backers has been rather discomfiting, and it is thought that some of them have been specially reserved for the meeting under notice. The following is the list of those left in the chief races after the last acceptance, and the handicaps for the five minor events, flor which acceptances will need to be attended to on or before Friday night:—

ACCEFTANCES. GREAT NORTHERN HURDLE RACE of 1250sovs. Two miles and a-half.

HA.NTHCAPS. The following weights have been declared by Mr. F. J. Macmanemin for events to be decided on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s winter gathering, which takes place on June 1 and 3. Acceptances for the events named are due on Friday next, May 24, with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, at 9 p.m.:— HUNT CLUB HURDLES of 200sovs. Two miles.

JERVOIS HANDICAP of 200sovs. Seven furlongs. st lb st lb

MEMBERS’ HANDICAP of 350sovs. Six furlongs.

Mossman . . 8 9 Pursefiller, Sir Fisher, Colorado, Styrax, Otter, Fionnuala, Dingle, Kauri King, Midnight Star, Gold Fran and Paul Moore, Master Strowan, Gluepot, Collector, Coalition, Bore, Marton, Golden Glow, Idealism and Nita are each engaged in one or other of the two leading jumping races at Ellerslie on Saturday of next week. A round dozen of these are in the Great Northern Hurdle Race and nine are in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and it would be too much to expect all of them to be paid up for. Gluetanus, Te Onga, Tenacious, Fisher, Thrace, Penniless, Wartime and Dancaster are the Aucklanders not mentioned already that are still in and a majority of them may stand their ground, if not all. Why Bon Reve, Harbour Light, Iceberg, Almo and St. Elmn were not paid up for at Wanganui we are unaware. Iceberg is presumably preferred in the flat race there, and he may perhaps have a run over hurdles there on Saturday. If the two 'first-named decline their Auckland engagements it will perhaps be because they are not standing the work to fit them, as both have been infirm at one stage or other of their careers. We are not assuming that such is now the case. Almo and St. Elmn are sound horses, and it is understood that they are coming to Auckland. Almo and Colorado are still our fancies. Since writing the above Iceberg and Harbour Light have been withdrawn from the G.N. Hurdles. Waimai, Moddite, Bonnie Jean, Ranza Mist, Hautere, The Channel and Hopye are Auckland’s representatives which have not been engaged at Wanganui. The last-named has broken down completely and will not start. Waimai shaped better on Saturday than previously and Hautere has caused some friends to regard him as more than an outsider by the way he has been working. Bonnie Jean is reported well, but neither the good-jumping The Channel nor Ranza Mist are likely to stay the journey right out, and it remains to be seen whether Moddite, who appears to have something in reserve when working, will be quite ready to get the full distance. St. Elmn is one that claims a double engagement, and whether he will run in the hurdle race or steeplechase we may be able to determine after Friday. Coalition and Collector, and perhaps Bore, may be the best in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Almo is still in the Cornwall Handicap as well as the Great Northern Hurdle Race, and if he took on the fiat race and St. Elmn the hurdle race we would not be surprised. There is no doubt that Almo is nicely treated in both races and should beat all on the same side in the Cornwall, while the three topweights, Bisogne for choice, should dominate the position of those on the other side. It may be mentioned that none of them are on the scene yet. Mr. McManemin has given us the result of a lot of work in compiling the weights for the Hunt Club Hurdles. Maiden Steeplechase, Jervois and Members Handicaps. These can well be left until after the lists are largely reduced by defections that are sure to follow, though it would seem certain that we shall have very large fields for the two flat races.
