HANDICAPS.
AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. WINTER MEETING. Mr. F. j. Macmanemin has declared the following handicaps for the principal events to be decided on the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern Steeplechase meeting, which takes place on June .1 and 3. Acceptances for these events are due on Friday next, May 10, at 9 p.m.:— GREAT NORTHERN HURDLE RACE of 1250sovs. Two miles and a-half.
Mr. John Lennard, of Waihou, Te Aroha, has quite a number of horses in the home paddocks, but has raced nothing since G. Absolum le t Ellerslie. Mr. Lennard will probably have a few racing next season. Ida, the corner-stone of his useful little stud, is now in the sear and yellow—her last natal daj r ticked off her thirtysecond year. This prolific old slave has well earned her pension in the rich pastures of Falcon Lodge. That fine mare Idra, and a fine upstanding half-brother, three-year-old, and a two-year-old by Bunyan from Madam Rose, the seven-year-old Valambrosa (by Extractor —Vieux Rose), and Autumn Rose (by Soult —Alba Rose) are all eating the bread of idleness at the present time and are mud fat.
To-day, says “Pathfinder” in “Stage and Cinema,” owing to the war, South Africa is in possession of a class of horse never before known in the history of racing, and the benefit from some of these in a few years will help materially towards the progress in this great country of some of the finest horses in the world.
