WAIPUKURAU JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING'.

The Waipukurau Jockey Club’s Annual Meeting, which is to take place on Easter Monday, April 1, is already attracting considerable attention in racing circles, the excellent programme which has been drawn up by the officials of this enterprising racing body well meriting the patronage of owners and trainers throughout the Hawke’s Bay district. while the wisdom of a trip to Waipukurau in connection with the gathering will appeal to other turf followers as well. The club is deserving of very wide support in view of the fact that all net profits from the meeting are to be donated to the patriotic funds, and, remembering their generosity last year in this direction, it is certain that a very substantial sum will again be available at the close of the meeting. Last year the club distributed no less than £4OO as follows: — £lOO each to the Red Cross Society (local branch), Mine Sweepers’ Fund, Salvation Army, and the Young Men’s Christian Association.

As regards the programme, which is to be submitted to. the club’s patrons, • the Waipukurau Handicap of 200 sovs. (1% miles), takes precedence, and the event in question should induce a liberal nomination. The Flying Handihap of 180 sovs., six furlongs, will doubtless attract a good field of sprinters, while excellent entries may also be looked for in the Easter Handicap, of 135 sovs. (once round), Owners of two-year-olds will have an opportunity of giving their candidates a run in the Oringi Handicap, of of 150 sovs. (five furlongs), and with the season well advanced the chance is one that should not be missed. The hack class has been well catered for, the Hack Handicap of 135 sovs. (1% miles), and the Hatuma Hack Handicap, of 150 sovs. (five furlongs), presenting special opportunities, while the Maiden Race, of 110 sovs. (seven furlongs), weight-for-age, for horses that have never won a race at the time of entry should prove the means of attracting a splendid nomination. The Lad- - res’ Handicap, of 80 sovs. (l 1 miles), minimum weight 10.7, in which the contestants will be piloted by gentlemen riders, completes an interesting programme.

Owners and trainers should bear in mind that nominations for all events close with the secretary, Mr. W. G. Nightingale, P.O. Box 118, Waipukurau. on Monday next (March 4) at 8 p.m.
