DEATH OF MR. JOHN STEVENS, EX-M.P.
The death of Mr. John Stevens, exM.P., and at one time Government Whip, and an old Rangitikei settler, occurred on Sunday at Palmerston North, where, during recent years, he had resided in feeble health. The deceased, who was born in October, 1845, was a good sportsman, a fine horseman, and a capable judge. He
saw service in the Maori war as interpreter to General Cameron, was cornet, lieutenant and captain in turn of the Alfred Troop, and afterwards captain of the Rangitikei Cavalry. Bought horses for the Imperial Government for South Africa during the war, and took and sent utility and racehorses to India, some of which, also New Zealand ponies he selected, distinguishing themselves there; acted on Native Land Purchase Commissions for some years end on the Wellington Land Board; identified himself with flax industries, and was altogether a remarkable man, and for some years a Justice of the Peace, and will long be remembered by his many friends on the west coast of this Island, and particularly in the Rangitikei, Manawatu, district, where members of his family and relatives reside.
