SUSPENDED HORSEMEN.

The suspensions of a number of riders for varying terms by the District Committee of Racing in the Wanganui metropolitan area as a result of happenings at Palmerston North, and of one in connection with the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting, show that attention is being paid to the riding and conduct of our horsemen in all parts of New Zealand. The terms of suspension are three months from December 26th in the cases of T. Pritchard and A. xMcMillan, and from January Ist of Wm. Hurle, while that more prominent horseman A. Oliver was suspended for one month from December 26th. Oliver will thus be cut of the saddle at the Wellington meeting this week, and the others will miss a number of important meetings before the expiry of their punishments. Fines will often meet the case when it is thought necessary to punish horsemen, and some of the fines have been very severe. Suspension which extends over a number of meetings, or even over one meeting, is much more severe than a

£2O fine to a man like Oliver, and* to those that do lots of riding three months at a busy season means a heavy punishment indeed. There are a lot of young horsemen coming on who are earning good money and others that will .be doing so. later on, and it is to be hoped that they will take warning and try to steer clear of troubles which older and more experienced riders have been bringing about them.
