ATHENIC’S WIN IN THE CARRINGTON STAKES.

The only horse ro withdraw from the Carrington Stakes was Nuwara Eliya. The defection of the grey was a little surprising, for he had been a good deal discussed in connection with this race, in which he finished second last year. His scratching left 2 6 starters, among whom Athenic was favourite, with Manchester, Popinjay and Gigandra some distance after him in the betting. The favourite proved equal to scoring a very popular win. At the start Popinjay came away first, but after a furlong Athenic took the

position from him and thereafter was not headed, winning not easily but decisively, with Manchester second, and TLord Liddell third. Gigandra, who was given lOst 81b to carry, finished fourth, Popinjay falling back to fifth. Athenic is a three year-old colt, owned by Mr. E. J. Watt, and trained by H. Rayner. his' success shows anew what a loss the v Australian turf had when that sire died. As a two-year old Athenic performed brilliantly, but his three-year-old form had been a little disappointing. His success in a big race like the Carrington Stakes is an indication that the Traquair stock, which is so brilliant among the two-year-olds/ may prove able to run on and win great things in later years.
