GLOBE THEATRE.

No more striking and thrilling drama has been screened in Auckland than the problem play, “As in a Looking Glass,” which was the special attraction at the Globe Theatre on Monday. Many hundreds have witnessed its presentation, both at the day and evening sessions, and remarked on its realism and uniqueness. A gambling house and an adventuress are the pivot of the story, which tells how a woman, the keeper of the gambling den, uses her handsome daughter as a bait to lure wealthy clients and then fleece them at the card tables. By her mother’s wiles, she is married to a Baron, is divorced, and subsequently becomes a social juggernaut, crushing all who come in her path. Love intervenes; by unfair means she causes the man she loves to break off bis engagement with another girl and secures him for herself and intends turning over a new leaf. Nemesis, however, takes a hand in the form of a previous confederate, who threatens exposure. In terror she poisons herself. Of great topical interest were the pictures of the S.S. Indrabarah (off Wanganui), speculation being rife as to whether the vessel would be released. “Indian Justice” was a good sample of Western drama, while “Classmates’ Frolic” telling how four schoolgirls eluded their teacher, provided hearty laughter. The usual change will be made to-day.
