HAWKE’S BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, Monday. Mr. A. G. Wood, who got through his duties as starter in a capable manner at the late gathering of the Gisborne Racing Club, although at the time he was suffering severely from gastric poisoning, was so bad on his arrival here last Monday that he had to be taken to the hospital where an operation was performed on him. Fortunately, he is now well on the way to the recovery of his usual good health, and expects to be able to leave the institution this week. Peary, who is privately trained at his owner’s private track, at Karamu, is said to be making good in his efforts on the trial. Peary, who has got 9.11' in the Winter Cup, is a full brother to North Head and North Pole, and half brother to North Star, Andree, Ice and Pretty Maid. Previous to his departure for Trentham last Tuesday Black Northern had been jumping the big country on the try out ait Napier Park, where the gelding has been domiciled since the Winter meeting there last month. Bobrikoff is still one of the regulars on the trial at Napier Park, the black champion goes better some mornings than others, and I am inclined to think that he is a sufferer from muscular rheumatism..

Mr. W. J. Douglas has leased Waipureku from her owner-trainer, J. Munn. She is a half sister, by Torpedo, to Te Puia. The Natier Park Racing Club are increasing their stake money for next season’s racing, and during that term .there will be no stake of a less value than a hundred sovereigns. Blackguard, the rising two-year-old half brother by Royal Fusilier to BobrikoX has been putting in an appearance of late at the work out at Napier Park. Evidently he has not got rid of the cold that he contracted some time back, for the other morning after trotting and cantering he coughed rather badly, which it must be admitted was not a good sign. He is a magnificent sample of the thoroughbred, and it would be the hardest of luck for his breeder-owner if anything happens to be amiss with him. Mangaroa has not been doing much of late as she has only been doingeasy work in the shape of trotting and cantering, and it, therefore, does not appear as if she is destined to face the man at the barrier next month at Riccarton in the Winter Cup. D. Munn, who is now attending to the education of Peacemaker, is not asking the gelding to do much. It may not be generally known that Merry Monarch, who has been making a name for himself in Australia,

is a half brother, by Merriwee, to Peacemaker. Mr. F. Tong, of Puketapu, has leased Goldfinch to Mr. G. Fuller. Sleacombe is jumping better than he has ever done before, and his educator anticipates that he will be sure to come back to his best form. J. Oldfield has also got in work a nice cut of a rising two-year-old by Birkenhead out of Hopeful, Birkful by name. There is plenty of him for he is a big bold youngster, well set up with good bone, and of very attractive contour. F. D. Jones, who got his collarbone broken through Sea Pink falling with him at Gisborne, is going along all right, as he has turned the mendingcorner. Fred Davis is slipping his baby pupils along in their exercises, and from the excellent way in which they acquit themselves in their tasks, it looks as if Mr. T. H. Lowry will play from a strong suit in the two-year-old department next season. Mr. A. McKenzie, of Gisborne, informed me to-day that Forward will be taken to Riccarton from Gisborne after the conclusion of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. Forward is a full sister to Prosper, and on her go at Gisborne should run well forward at Riccarton next month. Mr. J. Lucas, one of the owners of Continuance, passed through here today on his way to Trentham. After

assisting there Mr. Lucas lights out. for Christchurch. Golden Loop is making excellent progress in his schooling essays over the battens on the work out at Hastings. Coolbeggan (late Tripoli) will for the future compete in the interests of Messrs. Robson and Hickey. The former is the breeder of Pink’un. F. Stowe set Winning Post going again this week. The daughter of Victoria Cross has evidently greatly benefitted by the spell that she has had, for she has lost that weedy outlook which was one of her characteristics when she was last seen out with the satin up. Corazon has been turned out. Luckily there is nothing much amiss with the chestnut ’chaser, and his educator surmises that a rest will, bring him right. It is more than probable that V. Collelo will journey to Riccarton with Bandaliero. The son of Daunt is a clever, fast fencer, but he always' makes a better showing when the going is firm, and as a general thing the tracks at Riccarton at the ’chasing gathering are not of the firm order, and therefore if that should be the case, presuming that Bandaliero does make the jaunt, I should not be at all surprised if he did not display his most attractive form.
