CANTERBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The Geraldine Racing Club has appointed Mr A. J. Gibbs handicapper and Mr R. E. Hurley starter. The Wellington Racing Club has applied for October 2 6 and 2 8 as the dates for its spring meeting, but the Canterbury Jockey Club has given notice of its intention to object to these dates, as the spring meeting of the C.J.C. will commence on November 2, the Saturday following the Wellington meeting. St. Petersburg, by Kilcheran— Neva, and half-brother to Danube, was sent from Porirua to Oamaru this week. P. T. Hagan, of Southland, has arrived at Riccarton with Lugeon, Vulgar Boy, and Magdala, where he will complete their preparations for the Grand National meeting. Sea King gave such a bad display ovei’ the big hurdles at Riccarton this week that it is doubtful whether he will be persevered with in the jumping department. W. Retter, the jockey who was injured recently at Riccarton, still lies unconscious in the Christchurch hospital. Glenowi, the two-year-old, who won a race at the North Otago meeting in May, is the only South Island horse engaged in the Trial Plate at Wellington. C. Christie has arrived from Wingatui with Jack Ashore and Simon Pure for the National meeting. Silver Blaze has been giving excellent displays of jumping at Riccarton. Continuance, on reports, continues to grow in popular favour for the Grand National Steeplechase.
