HAWKE’S BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

NAPIER, October 16.

Bobrikoff and Beldame galloped six furlongs on the course proper at Napier Park this morning. Both finished well and are under orders to leave for Trentham on Thursday morning. J. Oldfield has added to his scholars Broiga, a five year old mare by Merriwee out of Ashar, who so far has not shown any form. With the exception of Gold Circle, J. McLaughlin has returned the team that he was educating for G. P. Donnelly to their owner. Gold Circle is is to be given opportunities over the battens.

T. H. Lowry has quitted Star and Garter (Royal Fusilier-Bijou) to a well-known follower of the game in these parts, E. Limbrick. The gelding last March was striking out in a satisfactory fashion, but unluckily he strained Himself and in consequence had to be retired. Of late he has been restricted to pottering about, and it is his new owners intention to hack him about for a time to see it the treatment will eradicate his troubles. Star and Garter is a full brother to Cullinan, Kohinoor, and the great Mogul. Dan Leno performed pleasingly over a mile and a half at the Park this morning. The first half of the trip he did on his own, and in the lattei’ part was joined by Cullinan. At the finish there was only one in it and that was Dan Leno.

T. H. Lowry seems to hold a lien oon the Gossip tribe, for besides owning the mare he also has Bobrikoff, his two half-sisters by Martian (War Scare and Wartalk) and a half-brother and sister by Royal Fusilier. Finland, who sired Bobrikoff, is also the property of T. H. Lowry, and there is next season the probability of a relative to the black champion making an appearance at Okawa, as Gossip this term has been associated with Finland.

Fusilea, ’the massive half-brother to Golden Water by Royal Fusilier is being educated over the impediments For a new chum he is displaying a lot of aptitude at the business. It is more than likely that Te Puia will be seen out at the approaching

spring meetng of the Auckland Racing Club. Later on the daughter oof San Fran will be mated with Birkenhead. C. Twist, of Greenmeadows, bumped up against hard luck yesterday when (Gold Reef-Vista) passing away. The mare was due to foal to King’s Guest in a couple of week’s time. Gold Thread may be considered to be out of the Steward’s Handicap, for her owner G. P. Donnelly informed me on Saturday that the daughter of Gold Reef had been mated with Hymettus, and that a preparation for the six furlongs event at Riccarton next month was not amongst the items intended for her.

J. C. McVay, president of the Napier Park Racing Club, who is also one of the members of the Racing Commission is making good strides towards recovery. For the first time for three weeks he was able to leave his bed yesterday. His medical attendant anticipates that it will not be long before the popular Hawke’s Bay sportsman will be about again.

Goldtinder put up a good serviceable gallop at Hastings on Saturday morning. His exertions at Napier Park last week have apparently done him good. His half-sister, Dazzling, is also going on the right way. Erin was shipped to Gisborne by the Victoria on Friday night. Judging by the splendid style in which Bobrikoff vanquished those opposed to him at Hastings and Napier Park, he would have been upsides with the winners in the weight-for-age events at Randwick and Caulfield, especially taking a line throough the running of Malt King, for it must be remembered that a couple of seasons back that Malt King could only get third to Bobrikoff in the All-Aged-Stakes at Randwick.
