WANGANUI, October 10
Fred Tilley journeyed down to Wellington last Tuesday to take charge of Lady Lucy on her arrival back from Australia, and the Beaton Delaval mare is now again quartered at Fordell. She has a sore leg, but this is not thought likely to be serious. Whether Tilley can succeed in landing Lady Lucy at the post for the New Zealand Cup in anything like her best form remains to be seen, but the chances seem to ’be against him, as the time at his disposal appears to be too short. 'Goodwin Park, Equitas, Mortite, and Midian, have all been doing good work at Fordell recently. The two former will be racing at Trentham next Saturday. Goodwin Park in the Wainui Handicap (one mile), and Equitas in either the Shorts or the big money. She is bound to carry a lot of coin in whichever she starts, as she is known to be very fit. She is engaged in the Champion Plate on Monday, and will probably make things very lively for the best of £he opposition, which will include Bobrikoff.
Kauroa will be given a run in the Wainui Handicap next Saturday, and the form shown by him, Goodwin Park, Kilostere, and the other New Zealand Cup horses will be watched with interest, The annual race meeting of the Waverley-Waitotara Club will be held next Monday, when a big crowd of West Coast sports is sure to assemble. Tjhe acceptances received by the club for the handiap events are easily a record, while the entries received for the catch weights events are very large, so that altogether the racing promises to be exceptionally interesting Since last meeting the club has effected a lot of improvements, which include the enlargement of the lawn to double its former size. The tote house has been shifted back and concreted all round. The grand-
stand steps have also been extended, and it now provides accommodation for about 1200 people. Tilley intends sending Midian and Mortite to Waverley for next Monday’s meeting- The former was one of the picks for the Cup, but she did not accept for that event, owing to the fact that a rider could not be secured. She will start in the Momohaki Stakes.
The Soult filly ,Labour Day, has been galloping well at Waverley since the Wanganui Meeting, and is likely to be sent out favourite for whatever event she starts in on Monday. It is said that she is likely to be a starter in the Auckland Cup, all going well. T. B. Bennett will be represented in the Waverley Cup by St. Lumsden, who is reported to be galloping in his best style on the tracks. The New Zealand Cup candidate, Lady Jean, continues to do steady work, and appears to be improving, but has not yet shown any form. St. Gate and Taft have been doing some fast sprinting on the local tracks recently, and in view of the half-mile evens at Waverley both are worth watching. The latter moved very attractively in a spin over four furlongs on Saturday with Coromandel, Albert Jackson intends giving Roosevelt another trial, and this game little horse may get back his form, as he appears to be sound enough now.
The soreness which threatened to put Roran out of action for a while, appears to be wearing off, and there is good reason to hope that the son of Pilgrim’s Progress will be a starter in the hurdles at Waverley. If he is as good as represented over the sticks, then he should make his mark at this game. Amongst the candidate for the hurdles at Waverley is Sir Tulloch, a very nice up-standing, dark bay gelding, who has put on a lot of condition since Jim Hall has had him under his care at Waverley. He is a good jumper, with a fair amount of pace, and should do well later on, but has hardly been up long enough to win yet- Hall is also training G'lenculloch, who is engaged in the short sprint events next Monday, and Kareroa. These three horses all belong to the Waverley sportsman, L. Bremer.
S. Brerton has Sylvania loking well. She hurt her shoulder some time ago, but is all right again now, and will be a starter in the short races at Waverley.
