WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S AUTUMN’ MEETING.

The autumn venture of the Wellington Racing Club 'will open ’on Friday and conclude the following day. The principal handicap to [be decided is the Thompson for which an acceptance of 21 has been received. Equitas heads the list in the mile race with 9.2 with which weight the daughter of Advance- should be capable of running out a strong mile. Gold Lace and Full Rate are a pair of speedy ones and Boanerges is in his right place with 8.9. The distance may be too short for Iranui and Sharpshooter would want to eclipse his past deeds to win. Vice-Admiral 8.4 is not consistent, but he has heaps of pace as has also Gipsy Belle, who may prefer a shorter journey. Dearest has not fulfilled expectations and Woodhey does not begin quickly enough fur a race of this descrip tion. Cheddar, is highly spoken of and those who saw him win the C.J.C. Autumn Handicap, say he had the race won at *ny part.' It must also be remembered that Mr. E. J. Watt asked 1000 gns. for the colt. Further down My Lawyer fcind Gunboat strike the eye. Taken all round the handicap bears a very open appearance, . but perhaps Boanerges will supply the favourite. The North Island Challenge Stakes will be another item on the first day, and with the best of the Doniinion’s two and three-year-olds contesting seven furlongs at weight-for-age, there is every reason to expect a - fine contest. Sir George Clifford holds a particularly strong hand having Counterfeit, Masterpiece, Madam Madcap and Flitaway engaged. Mr. G. D. Greenwood has Danube, Orton, Peirene, Mazurka and Vice Admiral, while the Messrs. Stead will be represented by Culprit, Sunburnt, Andiera, and Vice-Admiral. If, as reported, Danube is not himself, the race for the St. Leger books like being hardly worthy the name, as King Soulf is the only other horse who practically knows how to gallop. We can only hope that both Danube and King Soult will be on hand on Saturday to try conclusions. The race be looked upon as “good goods” for Danube, but King; Soult.was not seen at his best in the Great Northern Derby, and fit and well the son of Soult may prove to be just as good as Mr Greenwood’s crack.
