A QUID PRO QUO.
At a meeting of the Bathurst Liberty League (N.S.W.) the following resolution was carried unanimously: —That in view of the recent action taken by the no-license party, that the hotelkeepers and members of the league withold their patronage and support from tradesmen and others who are known to be in favour of reduction or no-license, or who, in any shape or form, support the nolicense party.” One of the members of the league remarked that they considered all those persons who were not for them were against them. This is the proper way, remarks Sydney “Fair Play” to protect the Trade from destruction at the behest of a mob of watery-eyed fanatics. The liquor dealers have too long endured injury and obloquy at the hands of the very people they help to fatten by their valuable purchasing, patronage. Turning the other cheek is a very good action, but when a man’s whole
property is threatened with confiscation and he and his wife and little ones with want, it is time to hit back.
“I question the wisdom of prohibition as a workable measure. Statistics from prohibition States show that “blind pigs” operate with more drunkenness as a result than where the traffic is properly regulated- Prohibition does not prevent drunkenness nor it» evil effects.” —(Rabbi S. M. Deinard, Minneapolis.)
