CHRISTCHURCH NOTES.

My Christchurch dramatic correspondent writes: —Very little theatrical news going here of late. Calve has been our only big attraction since my last, and we have made the most of her. By the way, most people here appear to experience a good deal of difficulty in pronouncing the great singer’s name. Some call her “Kalvy,” occasionally you hear people talking of “ Carve,” but “ Kalv” is the usual thing, although I have heard her spoken of as “ Calf,” which reminds me of the opening of the Royal Cafe in Cathedral Square some years ago. T was making a purchase at a small suburban store one day when the proprietress (to whom I was known) enquired whether T had visited the Carfo” yet ? Her daughter, entering the shop at the moment, overheard her mother’s question, and. with the smile of superior knowledge, remarried (addressing her maternal parent), “I suppose you mean the ‘ Kaff ?’ ” You meet funny people occasionally as you jog along through life. To return to Calve. Probably the duet between the diva and Gasparri, the tenor of the company, from “ Cavalleria Rusticana,” was undoubtedly the most popular item on the programmes submitted. The rendering was magnificent, and the effect it produced almost indescribable. It will probably be many a long day before we see Calve’s equal in this or any other New Zealand city. • The next big attraction will be the visit of Williamson’s “ Aladdin” Panto. Co., due to open here 16th inst., and to p’ay until the 29th. Report speaks very highly of this show. . • Our picture shows are all going strongThere is much money in pictures-
