HAWKE’S BAY.

NAPIER, August 8. The Hawke s Bay Jockey Club met last Friday. Present: Messrs. GHunter (chairman), G. P- Donnelly, T. E. Crosse, L. de Pelichet, E. J. Watt, G*. L. Sunderland, H- M. Campbell, M. Baird, W. J. Douglas, F. Armstrong, E. Gothard, J. E. Mclvor, J. C- McVay, F- Logan and C- L. Mackersey.

Authority was granted the Poverty Bay Hunt Club to issue riding permits on August 18.

Payments for claims on the accident fund were recommended as follows:—R. Tierney, £2 18s 6d; R. Jeffery, £l2 6s 6d; M. Campbell, £lO ss.

The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s programme for their race meeting on October 27 and 28 (stakes £1010) was approved. Licenses granted: Apprentices, A. Amundsen, J. Davis, H- Griffiths, J. Graham, T. Mr- G- Hunter was elected chairman for the ensuing twelve months. Messrs. Baird and Crosse, the newly elected members, were duly welcomed by the president (Mr. G. PDonnelly). The following resolution was carried: “That the committee, by resolution, desire to express their appreciation of the services rendered by Mr. T. H. Lowry to the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club as a member of the committee extending over a term of many years.” Mr. Martin wrote resigning his position as judge, when a resolution was carried, “ That the resignation be received with regret, and thanks recorded to Mr. Martin for past services.” The following officials for race meetings were appear + ed: —Judge, Mr. W- Hartgill; starter, Mr. H. Piper; timekeeper, Mr. C. M- Whittington; clerk of scales, Mr. H. M. Bishop; clerk of course, Mr. P. A. O’Dowd; detective, Mr. J- Waldron; , Messrs. J. >E., Henry (spring and winter), H. Coyle (summer and autumn). Accounts amounting to £212 18s lOd were passed for payment.

It was resolved that £8705 be given in stake money for the ensuing four meetings. Mr. W. J. Douglas presented a cup for the H-B. Cup Handicap for 1911.

F- Davis, Mr. T. H. Lowry’s private trainer, has at the present time eleven horses in work for the squire of Okawa, the contingent consisting of Merriwa, Virtue, Kohinoor, Warsong, Sea Pink, Bellah, Cullinan, Bobrikoff, Trebelli and War Scare. J. Oldfield has removed into the premises on the Wharerangi Road, that were at one time occupied by George Colello. Oldfield’s pupils consist of Sleacombe, Lolita, Woolongong and All Trumps. The latter mare has been laid aside for the past three, months, shoulder trouble being her ailment. Happily she now shows no sign whatever of the complaint, and, well placed, the half-sister to Trumpery ought to return her owner some of his outlay on her behalf ere many moons have set.

Te Puia, who is being hacked about on Te Mahanga station, is shortly to be put in active commission again. A. Wood, who takes the rough off the Karamu-bred youngsters to fit them for a preparation by Stewart Waddell, has lately had his band increased by the advent of a two-year-old gelded son of Birkenhead and Erma.

Eiya is still resting on Mr. Stanley Bennet’s station at Rissington. The ancient Rechabite was sold by auction last week for a tenner.

Goldfinch, a five year old son of Gold Reef and Miss Kalo, has been placed under the supervision of ARaynor at Greenmeadows. California is in great heart at the present time, and his owner-trainer, Mr. C- L. Lagor, is bent upon making the trip to the other side of the Tasman Sea with the big chestnut in the spring provided he can make suitable arrangements for the control of the other members of his string during his absence.

Last season the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club received the sum of £1906 10s from the bookmakers plying their avocation on the club’s course-
