CANTERBURY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 11. W. Clarke is now giving Gravitation some strong work and the son of Birkenhead is doing well. Gwendolina, another member of Clarke’s team, has thrown off the soreness, she was suffering from a short while back and is plenty of solid mare has been unlucky this’ season, 'but if her trainer can get her well she should pick up a decent stake during the autumn. Ringdove was well backed in Christchurch for the Wairarapa Cup, J>ut she had to be shaken up to win. Ristori was right off colour up north. J. R. Franks has started work with the Messrs. Stead Bros, team, which now consists of. Ringdove, Ristori, Crown Derby, Lily White, and Sunburnt. The team is located at Grasslea stables. R. J. Masbn returned from Auckland- last week, and after spending a few days here returned to Wellington with Lady Rema, by Merriwee— Lady Helen. Mason will have a small, ]but select team at Trentham with Armlet, Danube and Lady Rema. Canterbury stables will be well represented at this year’s -summer meeting at Trentham. Sir George Clifford will have the largest team which, will consist of Husbandman, Sharpshooter, Full Sail, Kilwinning, Broadsword, Saxifrage and Tenterhook. E. Cutts and his. son. Harry will both be at Trentham looking after the team, which is one of the strongest Sir George has sent to a meeting outside Riccarton. Bobrikoff and Diabolo are the favourite selections in Christchurch for the Wellington Cup, while Armlet is one of the most fancied for the Telegraph Handicap. Wet Day, who let her connections down badly at Dunedin, is having a rest. One of her legs appears to be troubling her. Los Angelos is also showing signs of lameness, but O’Donnell does not anticipate much trouble in getting his horse ready for autumn engagements. Grand Slam was offered for sale by public auction on Saturday last but failed to find a purchaser. Later on he was sold privately to T. P. Claridge for £BO. M. Hobbs has had another addition to his team in Kora, a two-year-old filly by Stepniak—Demeter. J. B. Reid has leased the filly to F. H. Payne. R. Longley had a successful trip on thej West Coast, winning six races with White Cockade, Montreal and De Witte. The last named was sold to a West Coast buyer at the conclusion of the Gf eymouth meeting.
