CANTERBURY.
CHRISTCHURCH, December 2. It was generally considered in Christchurch that Armlet could not lose the Feilding Stakes, despite the fact that she had a formidable field against her. Bad starting prevented the Menschikoff filly getting nearer to Gold Crest, and with a fair start ishe may be hard to beat in the Auckland Railway Handicap. The South Canterbury Jockey Club netted £348 10s. in bookmakers’ fees at its meeting last week. When the balancesheet is published, I expect to see a substantial amount on the credit side.
Stepniak’s progeny was in great form at the South Canterbury Meeting, six races falling to the credit of the Elderslie sire. Petrovna, Czar Kolohol, Caspian, Cute, Vologda, and Linda all Stepniaks, won races, whileOolodia, and Ard Reigh performed well. Husbandman was not greatly fancied by his connections for the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding, and his victory stamps the son of Treadmill as a really good colt, and also proves that his running in the Canterbury Cup was all wrong. Broadsword was fancied for the classic event, but Provocation will, I think, always prove his master in any distance over half a mile.
Flitaway, who was doing as good work as anything at Riccarton prior to the Cup Meeting, seems to have lost all her dash. Her'running at the Cup Carnival was very poor, while at Feilding it seems to have been equally as bad, and this is the filly that the stable thought wo.uld eclipse the deeds of Fleetfoot.
The Hororat'a Racing Club will hold its annual race meeting on Thursday. There are good fields in all the events. Stratagem will be a starter in the Auckland Cup. The mare did not run up to her best form at the Cup Meeting, and may be worth watching at Auckland.
Heorthen’s next appearance will be at the Christchurch Club’s Meeting. She is looking well after her severe races at Riccarton. Glenculloch, Sister Anne, Kilwinning, Applegarth, and Fasnakyle are likely starters at the Manawatu Meeting.
T. W. Cotton had a good innings with members of his team at Timaru, where Harvest, Silkweb, and Petrovna won races.
White Cockade has resumed active work, as also has Sea King.
