HAWKE’S BAY.
NAPIER, December 2
Mr. W. G. Nightingale has been appointed handicapper to the Nuhaka Hack Racing Club. Mr. W. G. Stead, of Kereru, is sending down Ecarte, a three year old daughter of Sant Ilario and Fantan, to T. Quinlivan, jun., at Hastings, where the filly will be put through a course of studies. Convoy’s three year old half-brother by The Possible, has been leased by W. Stowe from Mr. G. M. Currie. Ticotee, a younger full sister to The Probable, Prize Bloom, and Co., was railed from Hastings to Wellington last Saturday. The new owner of Primula’s daughter intends to set her going amongst the ponies at Miramar. J. Rolls is educating a daughter of Misfire and Daphne. She is not a very attractive looking specimen, but if she takes after her dam, “ old bread and butter,” as she used to be affectionately called by her owner, Mr. J. T. Blake, for consistency, and inherits some of her sire’s brilliancy, well, she will be pretty profitable property to handle. Bobrikoff, Downfall, Merigoe, and Chanteuse are back again at J. McLauchlen’s establishment at GreenlU6di(IOSVS Gold Crest and Ikon, half brother and sister, who, by the way, were both bred at Te Mahanga Station, were amongst the winners at Feilding this week. Formative is making good progress towards recovery. Mr. C. L. Mackersey has leased Cockatoo to Harry Hickey. Mr. E. J. Watt had the misfortune to lose Dalny (Stepniak—Sortie) last week. The mare, who was mated with Achilles last season, had a bad time foaling, and though every effort was made to assist and alleviate her, her’s was a hopeless case, and she finally had to be shot, her offspring also succumbing. Muskerry’s time of 2mins. 6 3-ssecs. in the Manchester Handicap, one and a quarter miles, at the Feilding Meeting yesterday, now equals the New Zealand record for that distance, which was previously held by Marguerite. H. Price severed his connection with T. Quinlivan, jun.’s, training quarters last week. California is being stretched out on the tryout at Hastings. Generally speaking, his essays are not as meritorious as they were when he was being prepared for his winter engagements. The Feilding Stakes has now been instituted three years, and it is a sort of peculiar coincidence that it was first won by a two year old, Glenculloch, while last year a three year old triumphed, Elevation, and on Tuesday last a four year old proved victorious. Downfall and Bobrikoff are getting through good solid half-pace work on the preparing grounds at Napier Park. The Brook mare, Barley Bree, purchased by Mr. E. J. Watt at the Steaa Dispersal Sale, arrived from the South yesterday. The mare was left to consort with Boniform, and she has now a foal at foot to Royal Artillery. Mr. E. J. Watt has disposed of Cork, a patron of J. Lowry’s stable having purchased Merriwee’s son.
Mr. J. Coghlan, the well known caretaker of the Hastings racecourse, is at present laid aside in the Napier Hospital. Aboriginie will not be a starter in the Auckland Cup. He will make the trip North, but his mission at Ellerslie will be the Great Northern Derby. T. Quinlivan, jun., has had the breaking-in tackle on the rising two year old by Stepniak—Couronne, recently purchased by Mr. E. J. Watt. The youngster is very wayward, and resented the interference with his liberty.
