The recently-formed Epsom Bowling and Croquet Club opened play for the season at Epsom on Saturday. Every bowling club in the district sent its representative, and during the afternoon Burke’s orchestra rendered a number of selections, while tea was dispensed by the lady members of the croquet club. In opening the green the president (Mr. E. W. Burton) expressed his club’s satisfaction at being able to return some of the hospitality they had so liberally received from sister clubs. Speaking of the club’s prospects in the bowling field he remarked that, although without a green last year, they had been successful in pulling off the invitation fours at the Auckland Provincial Association’s tournament, which gave bright promise for their future efforts. The club’s best thanks were due to Mr. Harrison for his counsel and professional assistance in laying out the green, while the green superintendent (Mr. D. Craig) and caretaker also deserved their warmest acknowledgments for the high state to which they had brought the green. Mr. Burton called upon Mrs. Burton to throw the jack across the green, and afterwards to unfurl the fine flag presented to the club by the vice-president (Mr. Jones). Mrs. Hill, as president of the croquet club, struck the first ball, and a number of games followed. .
