VICTORIA RACING CLUB

The Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting was inaugurated last Saturday at Flemington, in fine weather. Peru led out of the straight from Tangaroa, Lady Rylstone, Master Foote, Mountain King, and Welcome Trist following in that order. Along the back the pace was put on, and Tangaroa took up the running, leading Peru by a couple of lengths, who in turn was clear of Mountain King, then came Master Foote, Lady Rylstone, Welcome Trist, and Mazarin. As the field approached the home turn Mountain King on the outside ran to the front, with Tangaroa lying second. At the distance, . both Peru and Welcome Trist cut down the latter, but they could make no impression on the favourite, who won by a length, a head separating Peru from Welcome Trist. Time, 2m. 395. Elis was the first to move, with the favourite last. At the bridge Knox •was-in the van with Poseidon, Apologue, Ebullition, Ellis, and Tartan following in that order. At the abattoirs the field was bunched, but Apologue headed Knox on entering the straight. When heads were in a line for home, Poseidon soon assumed command, and despite a resolute challenge on the part of Apologue, the favourite won by two lengths. Ebullition was three lengths away third. Time, 2m. 12s. CUP DAY. The weather was all that could be desired for the second day of the V.R.C. Spring Meeting, and a record attendance witnessed the race for the Cup.
