ANOTHER £50 FINE.

At Balclutha last week, before Mr. Cruickshank, S.M., James Ludlow, proprietor of the Railway Private Hotel, was fined £5O on a charge of sly grogselling. The principal witness for the police was Constable Shalders, who joined the police force on August 12, and who went to Balclutha the same afternoon. Reuben Rooney, for the defence, said he had whisky with accused and Shalders, but the last-named took it with him in a bottle. Several other witnesses for the defence denied having had liquor in accused’s house. The second charge, of keeping liquor for sale, was dismissed.
