A DOUBTFUL POINT.

Iti the Whangarei Court last .week . a curious point was advanced by the solicitor for the defence in a case in which J. A. Jagger, licensee of the Pafua Bay Hotel, was charged with supplying; a Maori with liquor for consumption off the premises. It was pointed out that the liquor , had been supplied by defendant’s wife; and that the information was thus wrongly laid. The solicitor also questioned whether licensees were responsible for breaches committed by persons acting for them. Mr. Dyer said it was quite clear that persons ’ supplying liquor were liable, but it was not quite plainly stated whether ’ the licensees should be also -responsible. Sergeant Drake contended that licensees could generally evade the law if that were not the case. Mr. Dyer reserved his decision on the point until next Court day.
