MISS JESSIE MACLACHLAN.

The Star Hotel was en fete on Monday afternoon, when the St. Andrew’s Society of Auckland assembled to welcome Miss Jessie Maclachlan, the wellknown Queen of Scottish song. Amongst those present were Messrs Murdoch McLean (president of the society), J. S:ewart, W. F. Stewart, J. McK. Geddes, J. M. Mennie, J. F. Conolly, C. F. Edgar, Jas. Reid, Wm. Thorne, J. Arneil, R. Cameron, J. McLaughlin, D. Littlejohn, F. Robertson, F. Currie, and a number of ladies.

Mr Murdoch McLean, in extending a welcome to Miss Maclachlan on behalf of the society, said that although the gifted singer would probably find a greater welcome numerically in the Southern Scottish centres, none could possibly be warmer or more genuine than that her compatriots in Auckland accorded her. St. Andrew’s Society fully recognised how much the coming of such a great exponent of Scottish song did to pre serve the Scotch national sentiments and traditions. Mr J. McKail Geddes (expresident of St. Andrew’s Society) also spoke. Miss Maclachlan, in responding, said she was proud to receive a public welcome from the Scottish citizens of Auckland, and thanked them heartily for the honour done her. Afternoon tea was then served, and a pleasant hour spent in social intercourse.
