THAMES LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The quarterly meeting of the Thames Licensing Committee was held at noon last Friday. The reports of the police from the different parts of the electorate were of a satisfactory nature, and contained no complaints, except in the case of the Te Rerenga Hotel, in the Coromandel district. With regard to this house, a report was received relative to the licensee, Mr T. Johnstone. After some discussion as to the legality of the objections contained in the report, the question was eventually adjourned until .he next meeting. At the close of the ordinary business, Sergeant Darby applied for a reduetion in the hours allowed for publicans’ booths at race meetings, the existing rule being that all booths close at seven p.m. during the summer months and half-past six during the autumn. The sergeant thought these hours were too long, as they kept the police on the grounds unreasonably late. No change was, however, made, the committee deciding to defer the matter for further consideration.
