ATHLETICS.
The attendance at the Auckland A.A. and C.C. Sports on Saturday fell a good deal short of expectations. A great effort was made by the committee to make the gathering a success, but it seems evident that the pub’ic are not keen on witnessing sports, for despite the fact that there was no counter attraction, somq fifteen hundred only attended, which will jus. about pay expenses. The meeting was held at the new Victoria Park, the running track was rather uneven, but despite this some good performances were put up. Unfortunately extreme pressure on space prevents me from dealing with the meeting at length. E. Williams and C. G. Dickeson tied for the Victor Ludorum with eight points each. S. G. Cook, a Grammar School boy, showed very good form, winning the looydsf Open Handicap and the 1 ooyds for Boys under nineteen. Some of the fields were very large, 23 starting in the 440yds, and 15 in the Mile, 18 in the Half-Mile, while the sprint events all filled well. It is to be regretted that profit from the meeting will not allow an Auckland team to go South for the N.Z. Championships in February.
