WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S WINTER MEETING.

The date for holding this interesting fixture, viz., July 11 and 14, comes on apace. The programme for the two days is made up as follows: — Stewards’ Handicap of 150sovs, six furlongs; Miramar Hack Handicap of SOsovs, seven furlongs; First Hack Hurdles of SOsovs, one mile and three-quarters; Wellington Steeplechase Handicap of 350sovs, three miles and a-quarter; Parliamentary Handicap of 200sovs, one mile; Winter Hurdles of 250sovs, two miles; Te Aro Hack Handicap of 80sovs, five furlongs. On the concluding day will be run the Onslow Handicap of 125sovs, six furlongs; Trial Plate of SOsovs, six furious s; Final Hurdles of 200sovs, oi e mile and three-quar-ters; July Sceplechase of 200sovs, two miles and a-half; Winter Oats of 150sovs, one mile; Second Hack Hurdles of SOsovs, one mile and ahalf; Thorndon Hack Handicap of 80

sovs, six furlongs. It has been said in some quarters that the stakes are not very high for the hack events, but it must not be forgotten that the club has recently gone to a very great expense to make a new racecourse, and it would have been bad policy to have done other than “ gang warily” until finances have recovered somewhat. The programme provides for all classes of horses, and some interesting sport should result. A number of Northern horses have been nominated, as the racing will do good to the horses bound for the Grand National meeting at Christchurch. A double-event totalisator will be in use on each day of the meeting. Handicaps for the first day’s events are due to appear on June 30.
