The Royal Commission on the tobacco industry of the Commonwealth recommends that the industry be made a Government -monopoly, and estimates that a sum of ;£i,400,000 will be obtained in duties.

Court last week William Clifford and Frank Higgins were each charged with a breach of the borough by-laws, the"’ former for keeping his billiard saloon open after the prescribed hour for closing, and the latter for failing to take out a license. In the first case a fine of and 7s. costs was imposed, and in the latter’case a conviction was recorded, and an order for the payment of costs, 75., was made.

For the theft of three billiard balls from; the City Hotel, William Henry Stafford was convicted last Saturday, and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon. The Probation Officer furnished a favourable report. A prohibition order was also issued against the accused. An effort to solve the problem “What is whisky?” having, it is stated, had something to do with the offence.

The Tobacco Monopoly Commission, it is understood in Sydney, has decided, by four votes to one, to recommend the nationalisation of the tobacco industry. It is considered that the State could make an enormous revenue out of the monopoly. The Commission has come to the conclu-. sion that the existence of a strong corrrbine is detrimental to the interests of both consumers and producers.
