HAWKE’S BAY

Napier, March 27. Moata, the two-year-old son of Daunt and Hiamoe, that Mr S. Bennett purchased at the sale of the late Mr Richardson’s bloodstock, is being prepared by A. Woods. Mutiny’s younger full-brother, Chatterbox, died last Friday at his birthplace, Te Mahanga Station, from internal inflammation. The gelding at one time was the property of Mr E. H. Calthorp, but a few years hack was rebought by his breeder the late Mr W. Douglas. Douche’s younger full-brother has had the name of Reservoir claimed for him. Sir Bedievefe, of the “Referee” (Mr R. H. Skipworth) is at present enjoying a holiday in these parts. Two lads named Hercules Nicholson and Tama, a half-caste Indian, employed at the training stables of Mr T.

Quinlivan, junr., were indulging in some horse-nlav in the paddocks on Friday, when Tamu fell on Nicholson who sustained a broken leg. The boy was taken in an express and placed aboard the 9.20 train for conveyance to The Napier Hospital. The deeds of Te .Mahanga-tred horses were one of the features of the late Hcrowhenua Meeting. Gold Crown, Maui, and Guelder Rose, who all first saw the light at the Messrs Douglas Bros, property, securing half a-do<en races amengst them. A coming yearling, brother to Gold Crown, is one of the lots that will go up for d.sposal at the next annual sale of the Te Mahanga juveniles. Old Hussar, after ruining second to Horizon last week in the Disposal Stakes at the Waijawa Meetii g, was sold to a native sport for 15 guineas. The ancient 100 ed in such a fad state after his go that it seemed a question if bis new owner would be aible to get him to walx which dees not look promising for the future of Dreadnought’s son. Laertes, who ricked himself in one of his quarters just before the Nanier Park Meeting, is nearly convalescent. I do not fancy his lessee, Mr F. Martin, will go cn with the gelding. Captain Shar.n.n’s late owner, Mr G. Staunton, of Ongaonga, is handling the Waiuku —Primula gelding that he purchased last January, when the Mangatarata yearlings went up for sale. ScalLwag s vo inger half-brother bv Sou’-wester—South Star, ran a good race behind Athol Maid at Wainawa last Wednesday. Gold Seal will probably te placed under the gu dance of T. Jon.s for future engagements, and provided he stands, Gold Reef’s speedy and game son should not be long in rera.irg his native owner for the disbursement that he recently made to acquire pcssession of him.
