Napier, April 11.

The Napier Park Racing Club came out on the right side of the ledger over their Autumn Meeting, as they balanced £4Ol to the good. Mr E. J. Watts’ two year-old colt, St. Mark, was unsexed the other day by Mr Daniels. Perhaps the alteration in his state may be conducive to better exhibitions from him in the future. It is to be hoped so, for he has not so far been a source of profit to his owner, who is sparing no means to attain success at the game. Whitirea is to be given an opportunity to * develop over fences, his trainer intimating to me a few days back that he was going to "school Armourer’s black son over the little sticks at Napier Park. Should he prove all right in the new department of the business, his turn of foot should help him well along on the road to victory. Jadoo and En Avant will for the future contest in the nomination of Mrs Mahanga Kaiwhata. She is a great follower of the pastime and a lueky one too, and her husband, to gratify her, has made hei* a present of the pair. Fred Stowe has received an addition to his team in the shape of a three-year-old gelding by - Mousquetaire front Florence McCarthy. He was bred at Mangatarata Station, Mr Gollan’s place. Some time ago Percy Martin had him under his tuition, but he went wrong and was returned to his birthplace. Since then he has been gelded, and now shows no sign of any defect. Mr R. Gooseman has disposed of Brennan to A. Hall, the jockey. The price obtained for Torpedo’s sen was a highly satisfactory one, and his new owner evidently intends to put him to hurdle-racing. 1 notice he is one of the entrants for the hurdle races at the approaching Woodville meeting. This same club, by the way, has received a monster nomination for their fixture next month, and, with the handicapper up to his best standard, visitors to the popular trysting grounds of this suburban club may look forward to be regaled with real good sport. , 1 . Those three past grands in the order of galloping, Dauntless, Defiance, and Sir Launcelot, have again taken up the active pursuit of their vocation under Waddell’s guiding hand at Karamu. Punters have ruled the roost over the last day’s racing at the Auckland meeting, Battleaxe, Roy, Miss Delaval, and Rosella being well backed for their respective wins. Opou had a big order dealt with locally over his chance in the hurdles, but this miss thrown in did not equalise matters in the starting price merchants volumes ; outside of the commission he received no support here. Mr Pilmer, proprietor of the Waverley Hotel, is going to add to his loose-boxes, as he finds that the demand is much in excess of the supply, more particularly at race times, when he has found it necessary to turn patrons away, and that is by no means good business. The Napier Football Club held its annual meeting in the Criterion Hotel, on Saturday evening, Mr Hallamore presiding. The report and balance-sheet, showing the club to be in a satisfactory position, were adopted, and hearty votes of thanks weie passed to the secretary and treasurer for their past services. Seventeen new players were admitted to membership, and the following officers were elected for the ensuing season : —Patron, Hon. J. D. Ormond; presidents, Messrs F. Logan and J. Beatson; vice-presidents, Messrs A. C. Bennett, S. E. Cooper, A. J. Cotterell, S. H. Gollan, S. Charlton. J. F. Jardine, A. F. Kennedy, N. Kettle, F. Moeller, J. C. McVay, G. E. Sainsbury, G. S. Wenley, and E. H. Williams; captain, Mr M. E. Woods ; deputycaptain, Mr A. A. Cornford ; honorary secretary, Mr A. G. Saxby ; honorary treasurer, Mr W. Reid ; committee, Messrs R. G. Hallamore, H. C. Wilson, C. G. Saxby, T. Roulston, F. McVay, and G. D. Barclay; delegates to Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union, Messrs Reid and Hallamore; auditor, Mr George White.

Mr Arthur G. Pilkington, who was for some nine years with Messrs Mackechnie and Nicholson, the well-known legal firm in Queen Street, has commenced practice as a solicitor at Mercantile Chambers on his own account.
