A prosecution under the Gaming Act —Appointment of Mr Piper as starter —Entries for the Winter Meeting—Martin lay lor visiting Australia for the coursing season —Diack and lied broken down— Scratching of Blazer.
Dunedin, April 11. At the late Wingatui meeting the D J.C. kept their office open each day for the receipt of money to be put on the totalisator at bead quarters, the same being telephoned out. The authorities have taken exception to this and have issued several
charges against the man the club left in charge, William Smith. The cases are to be heard before Mr Carew on Thursday (to-day). Mr H. Piper is to be invited to start at our Birthday races next month. I regret to record that Mr Stephenson is seriously ill through a stroke of paralysis. The entries received last Saturday for our Winter Meeting shows a falling-off from last year, and very few outside horses are engaged. Martin Taylor visited Dunedin this week. He is going direct North in a week or two en route to Sydney for the May Cup and Waterloo Cup* and from thence to Melbourne fortheir Waterloo Cup. He is taking the following dogs —Four pups by Razzle Dazzle —Bess Morley, one by Sydenham—Apple Blossom, and one by Sydenham—Windsor Sovereign. Black and Red was taken to Christchurch, but did not race as he broke down on the Saturday prior. Goodman is with his horses at Timaruj awaiting this week’s race meeting there. Blazer has been scratched for his Wellington engagements.
